Oh snap! Criterion is releasing Cartoon Network's "Adventure Time." Oh wait, that's Harold and Maude.

What, was godardslave's comment serious?
I wish I had pop-ups in my Ozu criterions. Vlam! Mono no aware in your face!

Normally I wouldn't go for gimmicks like that, but in the case of Godzilla, it's pretty rad.

How can you hate the pop-up? I love practical gimmicks on my packaging, and this one seems among the coolest.

That's a hilarious gimmick! I'll upgrade to BD right now if the DVD packaging doesn't have the pop-up.

They should have used one of those sound chips that come in musical greeting cards. I'd love to flip open the cover and hear Godzilla roar... if they really wanted to be clever they could use the same effect on Tiny Furniture.

What, you open up Tiny Furniture's packaging and hear the sharp intake of breath of a thousand Criterion fanboys?

no...a bare-bellied Lena Dunham pop-up. After all, that's apparently what makes her so "brave."

Let's try to contain ourselves to just one thread of Lena Dunham-bashing.

The pop up finally explains why it was in a digipak. If you remember back to when they posted pictures of a proof sheet of the cover and it was a box.
I think it's great to have fun with it because Godzilla is possibly the most made-fun of movie ever, it's not as if it were the Seventh Seal with pop-up chess pieces.

Godzilla's pretty dark and creepy actually. Are you sure you're not thinking of the sequels?

Ah, all those sleepless nights wasted. . . -sigh-

Does this mean we should now check back on all their previous digipacks for paper-engineering Easter Eggs?

I love the Japanese version of Godzilla, the US is a bit hokey but I really just meant the character.

Zeds, Thanks for being a dick! They did have the one in the Cassavettes set as well.

Well, I did feel like Edgar Ramirez's erection popping out of the Carlos digi was a bit gratuitous, though not wholly inappropriate.

They had the Led Zeppelin III style circular windows in the Dazed and Confused packaging, so the pop-up packaging is the logical next step. Criterion has been doing cool and original things with the packaging for a while now (like the Fear and Loathing slipcase or the Videodrome VHS packaging, etc.), and I'm all for it. I think they have enough taste not to slip into some of the gimmicky and oversized gift set packaging that the major studios occasionally use.

Actually, the Tiny Furniture packaging should have one of those little cardboard tabs like gimmicky Hallmark cards - you pull it and it makes her eyes cross.

You press her nose and she says "I'm in the Criterion Collection and you're not...I'm in the Criterion Collection and you're not", in the voice of the Talky Tina doll from the Twilight Zone. You open the package and a check from her mom pops up. Folks, I'll be here all week.
