How often does MoC release a new calendar? Is their practice similar to Criterion's every 15th of the month announcement schedule? Thanks for the help.

They announce things two months before release but, unlike Criterion, they don't have releases every single month.

I was asking because I'm planning on buying a couple of MoC titles during their Christmas sale and wanted to know if it was better to hold off for more announcements since they are now possibly going blu. I'm all nervous and I don't want to have to double dip in the future. But it's probably inevitable that I'll have to...eventually.

There are very few existing titles that we'll be retooling for BD.

Yeah, I can't imagine that most of the titles in the MOC catalog have both the necessary materials and the market for a BD re-release. I feel very safe in buying most of their existing SD releases.

City Girl is now, as widely expected, Blu only - they've taken the DVD cover off the catalogue page and There's Always Tomorrow has gotten the spine 86. M still seems to be DVD & Blu - unless this is still subject to change, Nick & co must be anticipating decent sales for a DVD of M in spite of the Criterion and the previous Eureka disc.

Sorry to deviate away from the recent Sirk title and confirmation of City Girl being Blu-Ray only, but I was wondering what are the chances of obtaining more films released from ATG?

I know someone who runs a prominent cult DVD label who's been struggling to the the rights to the films Shuji Terayama, but because ATG was a collective, the rights are all over the place. There are so many great films by Oshima, Masamura, Wakamatsu and Yoshida that have no English friendly editions. My only place to turn to some of these has been to bootlegs and some of them look downright terrible. How MoC manage to swing the Matsumoto?

It's a tough one to decide between your edition and the Criterion on DVD! Both have a lot of unique extras. I think the two comms and the English version of M swings it your way though, and your cover is fantastic.

Can I just ask why a lot of the extras on the previous Eureka release didn't make it on the specs of this new MoC one? Or are they covered in the booklet instead? I'm referring to these as listed on Beaver:

• Documentary - The Restoration Of M, Peter Campbell.
• Visual Essay - "Lending Order to Terror" by R. Dixon Smith
• Film Restoration and Comparison - Martin Koerber
• Photo Gallery and animated slideshow
• Set designs and final screen comparisons
• Animated biographies and historical backgrounds

The restoration piece was about an SD restoration-which-we're-not-using. Everything else is covered, either in the commentaries or the booklet.

No I haven't, I was just curious that's all as to whether they weren't included due to licensing issues or whether you simply chose to leave them out as they weren't worth including

I've been waiting for you to announce your specs for M to decide whether to pluck for the Criterion currently on sale at Amazon or whether to wait for yours. I think I'll wait for yours as you seem to have done it again and drawn up a more inticing line-up than Criterion yet again, like with Vampyr and Francesco giullare di Dio. Whether I'll go for the DVD or BD all depends on whether I get lucky at Aldi this Christmas. But M's one film I'm willing to break my "Don't buy the DVD if there is a BD you'll want in a year's time" rule for, that's for sure.

Its a landmark classic arriving on blu ray; you'll kick yourself in a year if you get the DVD now. IMO.

Having never seen it before I'd rather be able to see it now-ish on DVD and lose a few quid buying and selling the DVD and then buying the Blu-ray, then I would having to wait over a year and a half just to watch it on Blu. Unless I can pick up a region-free Blu-ray player at Aldi this Christmas then I won't be going Blu-ray until I return from my year abroad in Italy and Germany as part of my degree (Summer 2011!). Blame the idiots who devised region-coding as that is literally the only thing preventing me from going Blu right now. I refuse to buy a player that won't be able to at least play Region A + B, and all regions of DVDs.

As I said in my last post, there are UK stores offering modified Blu-Ray players which will play everything. The Panasonic BD60 and 80 look like great choices for budget-conscious folks since the Oppo is still rather pricey.

I like the exclusive extras on M, but where is the Kalat commentary?

Daines, if my post sounded like I was being judgemental or dismissive of your circumstances, then I'd like to apologise whole-heartedly and reassure you that all I meant to say that it was just a pretty enticing offer. I hear you re finances and other commitments: if it wasn't for the annual bonus payments my company gives out and the fact that at some point me and my partner will be able to share living costs etc when he gets a job after our marriage, I couldn't afford Blu-Ray as soon as April. In hindsight I wish I'd have waited with some purchases (Mankind on Blu instead of DVD) but c'est la vie.

Any chance that the "very few" existing MoC titles in the running for a blu upgrade might include Le Silence de la Mer in view of the upcoming Gaumont blu issue?
