And I suppose it is looking very likely that 2011 will be a five eclipse releases year like 2009. They've never released an eclipse set in November or December, I suppose we could get an Oct and Nov eclipse, but it doesn't seem likely.

A couple of those (Feyder and McLaren) were released under the HVE imprint by Image after the latter bought out the former. .

Around about when did Image completely take over HVE?

So it would be a relatively safe assumption to say that the titles HVE released in May 2005 (Kiyoshi Kurosawa) or at sometime around then were the last Janus titles, to which Criterion has direct access to (without further licensing agreements). And much before then is likely still on the table. It is definitely something Hulu has bore out....

Not all HVE titles were partially licensed from Janus Films either. Just films that mention being in "The Classic Collection". I'm pretty sure the McLaren's and all the features licensed from Toei do not mention that on the box and are not on the Hulu site. Cure was licensed by Cowboy Films which Criterion has licensed two titles from which would explain how they own Cure.

OK, so this is pretty random, but I decided to ask because I REALLY want to know:

How likely are the chances of Criterion releasing H.G. Clouzot's LA PRISONNIÈRE?

I know, I know, probably not very high - but Criterion has released three Clouzot's to my knowledge (Corbeau, Wages of Fear, Diaboliques), and both La Prisonnière as well as the brilliant La Vérité both have not been released in the US so far.

I already own the film on DVD, and it is my favorite of Clouzot - but the master is quite bad, and for a film of such stylistic brilliance, a proper restoration (and BD) should be vital. Anyways, I am ranting... so, how high are the chances?

I think they might actually own the rights to that one. I know they have at least one other Clouzot waiting in the wings.

Actually, L'Assassin would be a slight disappointment, as this one was released in a modest version in europe - and, to be honest, I find his 60s work much, much more interesting than his early films. La Vérité would also make me happy, but La Prisonnière would be the icing on the cake.

This is highly unlikely as Gaumont dropped their plans to release this because of poor elements. So unless Criterion have gone into a co-restoration job I wouldn't hold your breath.
Also La Verité is a Warner so no joy there probably.

Ah, now I remember. L'Assassin habite au 21 was mentioned in this post as a rarity coming to Hulu, so I guess I just assumed it would be released eventually. Seeing that it hasn't even shown up on Hulu yet, I wouldn't call it a certainty (even moreso because of what NABOB just said).

Looking back at the newsletter released in January, I have a sneaking suspicion that the woman in black dancing on the boat is representative of La Notte. Specifically of Monica Vitti. Anyone agree? I really hope so.

Did anyone at Criterion say that all of those movies hinted by the New Year's drawing would be released this year? If they release four new titles per month, that doesn't leave them much more wiggle-room in regard to their releasing movies that they haven't hinted at. (They didn't really hint about those Chabrol's, for instance.)

So, are all of those New Year's titles set to be released this year? Also, there's been a lot of talk about the November announcement. (Announced in August.) Do they release more titles in November, or something; or do they release the "meatier" stuff? I've never noticed. I'd just love to see more announcements sneak up on me this year.

As a general rule, November is a big month (for instance, the BBS set was released in November last year) and December is a really light month.

It was a big month last year, but had it been in the past? I hadn't noticed. December is certainly a light month though. There was that one year they only released 25 Kurosawa films in December instead of all 32 of them. Lazy.

I think being in the New Year's drawing implies that at that time they intended to release it in 2011, but circumstances can always change. In any case, here are the official hints still outstanding:

There are two others, I think, but these ones are the explicitly announced ones. I'll disregard Wild Strawberries, since it's not a new title. There's 12 new titles due this year if they announce four per month. That's 7 after canceling out the 5 new titles listed above. Then, maybe World on a Wire, The Game, The Soft Skin, and The Four Feathers will also get released. That would leave three surprises! That's good enough for me.

Yeah, that'd be too good to be true. I'm just hypothesizing. I don't think there's absolutely no chance of either of them getting released this year, though. Screenings for World on a Wire end in late September, right? (That's around when I'm seeing it.)

World on a Wire has been teased by my local MFA in their new film calender for a 4th quarter '11 engagement, so it isn't going away just yet. Janus usually lets stuff tour for 8-12 months before the DVDs drop. Ergo, both W.o.a.W and The Soft Skin are solid locks for Criterion 2012 (and will probably be featured alongside Tiny Furniture in that year's cartoon, since we already know about them).
