I may be missing something but Hulu is saying that Zatoichi, six from the series, is presented by the Criterion Collection.
Edit: It even has the wacky C. God damned I'm happy if this is real.

Criterion posted that on their Facebook page earlier today. Janus has had the rights to the Zatoichi films for years, previously releasing them via Home Vision. It remains to be seen if they'll be moved to Eclipse or something eventually.

Jerry Lewis on CC would be the coup of the century! Though frankly I prefer his own directorial efforts to those of Tashlin.

If Lewis himself owns any of these works, does it increase the likelihood of a CC relase?

This begs the question... who owns The Day The Clown Cried? Has Criterion ever released an "unreleased" film?

I just saw a small portion of part six on Hulu to compare to the HVE release (I don't have it with me, but it's one of the best in the series and I've seen it about five times so I have a good memory of what it looks like). The opening credits are still slightly picture boxed and the colors in the film make me think it's exactly the same transfer as previously found on the HVE release. A shame considering parts one and two could use much better and anamorphic transfers.

Is the film series still split?

The last I knew, it was as follows:

Janus - 1-13, 15, 17-19
Miramax - 14 (never released on R1 DVD)
AnimEigo - 16, 20-25
Tokyo Shock - 26, TV Series

Lewis himself owns it and is apparently deeply ashamed of it, which is why it will never be released.

"to raise the question".

I don't believe this is true, I thought Lewis was keen to get it released ("The picture must be seen, and if by nobody else, at least by every kid in the world who's only heard there was such a thing as the Holocaust.") but Joan O'Brien kept preventing it?

That wouldn't explain why Lewis refuses to talk about it, keeps it locked away in his office, and told a reporter it was "none of your goddamn business" when asked if the film would ever be released. He sounds rather upset about it to me.

The Day the Clown Cried just sounds like one of those projects that toes a very fine line. If you hit the mark, it could work (see: Life is Beautiful). But if you don't..... look out.

I suspect Lewis determined that they didn't hit the mark, and he knew that could cause him some serious PR problems, so he's locked it up.

Harry Shearer's readction upon seeing The Day the Clown Cried is pretty classic:

"if you flew down to Tijuana and suddenly saw a painting on black velvet of Auschwitz. You'd just think 'My God, wait a minute! It's not funny, and it's not good, and somebody's trying too hard in the wrong direction to convey this strongly-held feeling."

Assuming they'd save Artists and Models for the mainline with a Blu release? [-o< Or does Paramount still have that one?
I was naming completely unreleased in R1 titles, though the thought of Tashlin in Blu-ray is enough for me to turn into aox

Except I doubt Shearer ever thought much of Lewis to begin with. I believe the problem with getting the film released has more to do with no one can decide who owns it and so Lewis can't release it or even get another studio to distribute it

I'm wondering if most want to see The Day the Clown Cried out of curiosity or because it's considered a great film?
Although I suppose not many know if it's a great film at all since barely anyone has ever been able to see it.

I want to see it because I love Jerry Lewis, plain and simple. Frankly I'm not otherwise too enamaored of Holocaust films.

Considering it was released in 1969, I don't know why it should. Even if you're of a mind that if something didn't happen in the USA it didn't happen at all, the ridiculously belated US release of this still preceded Criterion's disc by more than a year.

I'm sure there are some Criterion releases that debuted in the US on DVD (Solo con tu pareja comes close, though that's a pretty scary precedent!), but that's a completely different situation from a film that's long completed and unreleased anywhere.

So with the release of Bigger Than Life just a few weeks away, and the excellent look it has on the dvdbeaver review, I was wondering if there`s any possibility whatsoever that they`d do a release of Johnny Guitar? or is that out of the question?

No solid confirmations but they've teased that we might see some Republic Picture titles in the library in the future. They've been coy when asked about Letter From An Unknown Woman, Johnny Guitar, Macbeth, etc.

A restored print of Letter from an Unknown Woman is playing at the Filmhouse in a few weeks, so we could well see it soon if Crit have the rights

While everyone asks for Letter from an Unknown Woman, Republic Pictures also has another Ophuls, "Caught". If Criterion grabbed one, I'm sure they would grab the other.

Sure everyone knows The Red Shoes has been confirmed for June, but Everlasting Moments is coming in the "summer", according to the Criterion website. You know, for people that knead to know.
