How many threads do you need?
I only need one, but for some reason when I opened this one it was showing the most recent post as being sometime in september, so I was surprised there wasn't more recent conversation about it. It's showing the updated current posts now.

The FIRST page (of the 8 pages in this thread so far) has a last post from September 2009. ;~}

Bullshit. I stopped ordering boxsets from Amazon because of repeated problems. Can't imagine they'd get one to me in decent shape. (Even if I did have a spare $284.99 floating around, nothing better to do with it, that is.)

I don't know what you say, but i think Amazon UK is the best retailer in the world in terms of packaging (after Merlin of course!)

I'd say all in all they're pretty good, but certainly had problems with them too. Not nearly as bad as the US, but they too are on my shitlist regarding boxsets. (Apologies for off topic stray.)

My box set arrived just some moments ago, as Napier said it is indeed a beautiful box set. I had my doubts before ordering it, after all, it would have been nice to have the special features for each movie in their "personalized" box etc. But since i only own a few, i had to order this, now that it has arrived i don't regret ordering it.
What a pity cyan, I ordered mine from amazon and it arrived in perfect conditions, How was your box set packaged? Did you order from amazon?

Amazon could avoid all of these broken DVD's and cases if they used packing material for crying out loud. I get big boxes with DVD's tumbling around in them like a dryer. I'm against Styrofoam, so we use bio-degradable wheat sorghum packing peanuts. And I'm shipping glass jars and bottles of organic unpasteurized Japanese shoyu and miso. I mean, even newspaper would help.

For those of us placed at a disadvantage for not owning the "AK 100" Box Set containing the quartet of early Kurosawa films, there is a a modicum of relief on the immediate horizon until they are released as an Eclipse series (assuming they will be). Turner Classic Movies will be airing all four of those "otherwise unavailable" films on March 23, 2010 (6 a.m.-11:30 a.m. EST), as part of an ALL DAY movie festival celebrating Kurosawa's centennial .
here is a link to the exact schedule of programming.
**NOTE TO MODS** Feel free to re-post or altogether move this to a different part of the forum (Older films/TCM thread?).

A question for anyone that owns the box. Could you look on the back of the Madadayo disc and see who Criterion licensed the film from? Thanks!

Here's a special way you can support the Brattle Theatre (
http://www.brattlefilm.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) where Janus Films was started while purchasing the box set on Criterion's site-
Buy AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa at criterion.com by April 22, enter the code AKBRAT at the prompt, and you'll not only save 25% off the retail price of $399.95, you'll be making a $25 contribution to the Brattle!
This deluxe, linen-bound set includes timeless masterpieces from one of cinema's greatest directors, films like Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and High & Low. Featuring twenty-five of the films he made over the course of his fifty years in movies-from samurai epics to postwar noirs to Shakespeare adaptations-AK 100 is the most complete set of his works ever released in this country, and includes four rare films that have never been available on DVD.
To take advantage of this special offer, shop at criterion.com and enter the code at checkout. Criterion will take 25% off the cost of the boxset and send $25 to the Brattle Theatre!

Hey kids, even MTV has heard of Kurosawa!
Here are a bunch of shitty movies that wouldn't have been possible without him.

Some of those are a real stretch.

Looks like this set is going OOP. Criterion just tweeted:
We’re down to our last 100 copies of the AK 100 boxset. When it’s gone, it’s gone: t.co/ZUvkzMeOIt

So they finally have a reason to release "Madadayo" on its own.
