It was released in Italy on DVD (no idea why only in Italy)

Yes, the 150-minute cut (not 155 minutes - or am I wrong?) reviewed here, running 144-minutes in PAL.

Thanks for pointing that out. I want to pick it up now as The New World is one of my favorite films.

They are actually the same. My mistake for writing 155 min. While some sites list 155 min. as the "pre-release" (aka Academy) cut's runtime, 150 min. seems to be the correct figure.

Person wrote:I have yet to see The New World. Those few that I trust say that it is tedious. But I'll stick it on my rental list. Apocalypto is also on the list. I'm a big fan of Bruce Beresford's, The Black Robe (1991).
I really wanted to like this film, but ultimately found it to be unbearably tedious.

There are directors about whose films I'm ambivalent, for example Godard's Weekend, which I like intellectually even as the film (intentionally) aggravates the hell out of me, but Malick's film just bored me. The New World has some gorgeous--I mean really, really gorgeous--cinematography, and Wagner's Overture to the Ring Cycle playing during the scene on the ship is awe-inspiring, but overall the film just dragged and dragged. I even came over to this thread hoping for some enlightenment, and although I picked up on a lot of the film's themes, my opinion of the film remains unchanged.

I'm not going to accuse Malick of being a hack, or his supporters as being pretentious, and I hope nobody will attack me for a perceived lack of cinema sophistication, but Malick is definitely not for everybody, and I certainly count myself among those who don't "get" his work.

That about covers it for me, as well. I've always found the pace and level of detail in Malick's films engrossing and wholly satisfying.

I recommend that highly, as well.

There is an Italian 2-disc edition that contains both the 135min theatrical cut and the longer 150min cut.

From IMDB: "A 150 minute version of the film played for one week starting Dec 25, 2005 at two theaters in LA and two in New York, so the film would be eligible for Oscar consideration. Before the wide release in January, Malick re-edited the film, cutting it down to 135 minutes."

Has anybody got this or seen it? Are there significant differences between the two cuts that would make purchasing the Italian disc worthwhile having already purchased the existing DVD release with the 135min cut?

I've seen both the 150- and the 135-minute versions, but so far apart that I couldn't really locate the changes.

However, here's a pretty thorough breakdown of them

any word on this mysterious SE that was supposed to be out a year ago? I've held off buying this since it was essentially confirmed before the initial release that Malick intended a longer cut in an SE...i'm getting tired of waiting!

Apparently, you can find the longer cut (along with the shorter one) on an italian DVD just released.

I just checked out that link to the Italian site.

Has anyone here actually purchased this 2disc Italian dvd?
I'm wondering if anyone has any 1st hand details, and if there's a bilingual website where it's easily order-able.

I saw the wide release in the theater, but I've been holding off buying the U.S. dvd too.......even though it's under $10 many places.

Sarah Green, Malick's producer on THE NEW WORLD, has publicly said that what you're referring to as the "pre-release" cut will "always exist." (actually it was released in NY and LA.)

This 2 disc set includes the above mentioned, "original" 150min cut, played at the festival(s) and in limited release. The first version seen by critics. And for now, this Italian dvd seems to be the ONLY place it still exists.

No ultimate 3 hour version yet....if ever

Coming from Warners October 14; press release:
Burbank, Calif, June 23, 2008 - The New World, Academy Award® nominated director Terrence Malick’s (The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven) adventure-filled journey of discovery, will be released October 14 on DVD in a new amped-up Extended Cut. This edition of the critically-acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated epic recreating the turbulent first days of the new America now features more than 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage, heightening the viewing experience with more battles, more intensity and more visual splendor. Also included is a comprehensive, ten-part documentary – Making the New World – which captures the unique creative challenges filmmakers faced. The New World Extended Cut will sell for $19.97 SRP.

Synopsis
Powhatan tribal people stare in wonder as three ships approach shore. It’s a story every schoolchild knows; the story of Capt. John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (Q’orianka Kilcher). Now, as told by filmmaker Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line) in this extended version with more than 30 minutes of footage unseen in theaters -- it’s a story you never imagined. Working in part from first-hand histories and adding his extraordinary sense of image and human drama, Malick crafts a visceral, spellbinding tale of the Jamestown settlement, of cultures connecting and of deadly consequences when connections fray. Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer also star.

· A comprehensive, ten-part documentary Making the New World capturing the unique challenges of creating this historic epic.

Always knew it was a matter of time. But I have NO qualms about double-dipping on this one. I hope that documentary is more than 10 2-minute parts.

Still waiting for The Thin Red Line Extended Cut, I never even knew there would be something like it for TNW.

My previous post aside, I AM surprised that Warner's not interested in releasing a deluxe edition of Badlands. They are the ones who own it, correct? And it seems to me like public interest in Malick grows every year.

YEEEEEEEEEAH!!!!!

Sorry but that was my honest initial reaction to reading the thread title. I cannot believe this is actually happening. 30 minutes longer? Oh wow, I cannot wait. This must not be the Los Angeles cut because it was only 15 minutes longer. This must be an entirely different beast!

Making the New World is the same documentary on the current disc. It's so comprehensive that Malick isn't even in it. Who cares.

It would take exactly a Malick film on BluRay to make me take the plunge.

With everything from So I Married an Axe Murderer to Meet the Browns getting a hi-def release these days, it's incredible (and heartbreaking) that the extended TNW isn't being released simultaneously on Blu-ray.
