Sorry, in what universe does that review "engage with the film"? I don't like Roma as much as most critics seem to, but Svet's "arguments" here are largely incoherent nonsense (as is being discussed in this thread).

I wasn't aware the review had already been posted. Sorry for the duplicate posting.

Seems to be flying under the radar, so for those unaware, Road to Roma (from the CC release) is streaming on Netflix. Really hope they follow suite with the other titles.

Bulls**t! (not directed at you but at the distributors) Criterion imports get sold at a premium at fnac and Gibert Joseph all the time.tenia wrote: Sat Jan 25, 2020 2:22 pm
I guess nobody cares about selling to French and German customers the release #1014 from a collection they've never heard of.

They do, but they're still not very popular within the general audience. It's a very small thing though, but I wouldn't be surprised to read a few people raising their eyebrows if it keeps the Criterion branding as the online covers seem to suggest so far.rrenault wrote: Tue Feb 18, 2020 12:43 pmBulls**t! Well, at least for once, it'll be cheaper to buy a Criterion in France, I guess !

Thanks for that! I actually saw it last night. It was interesting.Paupau wrote: Mon Feb 17, 2020 8:40 pm Seems to be flying under the radar, so for those unaware, Road to Roma (from the CC release) is streaming on Netflix. Really hope they follow suite with the other titles.
I am iffy on the film itself but Cuaron's work is a masterpiece of film direction.
The documentary kinda had a dual effect on me - it made me appreciate his direction even more if possible. But also stripped away some of the mystique behind the film. When you see shots like the Corpus Cristi Scene - it is a miracle. It elicits a holy shit how did he do that reaction. But watching how it was done can dissipate the magic a bit because the next time I am watching the film I can see the seams in the fabric.
But a worthwhile look into the process of creating this film - which for better or for worse - remains a formidable film.

Re: 1014 Roma (2018)
The feature about the film's theatrical release is an insane puff piece - I understand they're not going to go ahead and discuss the intricacies of why the film wasn't able to get a normal release but other than the conceit of the theater van thing basically none of these special screenings would have been necessary at all if Cuaron and the two producers hadn't taken a check for $20m from a distributor that they knew would lock them out from a normal release. I suppose it's nice that they were able to get a nice enough rollout regardless of this necessitated small release according to the feature but it really doesn't seem like it's painting it in a particularly truthful light.
I do like the idea of features about a film's release itself, though, as I think the actual exhibition/distribution part of the chain tends to be ignored by a lot of the indie labels as an instrumental part of a film's legacy - just not for a movie that so openly shot itself in the foot if they actually did care about anyone seeing it in theaters.

What am I missing about Svet? During his DVDTalk days, he was an empathetic, open cinemagoer: he's currently *checks notes* spouting psuedo-science and quoting James Woods on his Blu-ray.com profile, it seems. Is the site even aware that one of its admins is using it as his own private InfoWars?soundchaser wrote: Mon Feb 17, 2020 7:40 pm Sorry, in what universe does that review "engage with the film"? Re: 1014 Roma (2018)
I've reported his personal posts in the past. They got deleted and Svet stopped posting this kind of stuff for some time, but he resumed doing so and I'm not sure his Eddie Gallagher's supporting post would be deleted if reported nowadays. Same for his current "mainstream media is fake news" type Covid19-related posts and other similar stuff (now down to relay without mention satirical content).
It's all the more surprising that blu-ray.com always had a strong "no politics here" history and, probably, policy, so non-short discussions about politics would be swiftly deleted by mods.

Who would you recommend I report him to? The politics are one thing: he's now spreading scientific misinformation that could get people killed.tenia wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2020 7:45 am I've reported his personal posts in the past. Great! Where is that? I don't see a comment here...? Or maybe I'm missing something (which is likely).

I don't think I'm authorized to view it. Ah, well - long as somebody's reporting this sort of behavior!

New members have to make five posts before they have access to the subforum containing that post and as of me writing this you have four, so you should be able to see it after your next post. But the tl;dr of that thread is yes, people are reporting him

Re: 1014 Roma (2018)
I was really impressed by the extras on this disc, slickly produced and legitimately "behind the curtain" type stuff. I would've liked something from a critic, though, as Roma is not without controversy (see Richard Brody) and a discussion of its merits (or lack) would have been interesting.
But overall, a great offering. Maybe a kind-of defense of physical media in a Netflix disc release? I'd love to see the same care give to The Irishman.

I enjoyed the supplements too. Can’t believe how much production went into this film. Impressive. I loved that Cuaron didn’t tell Yalitza Aparicio that the baby was going to be still born. Powerful stuff. And I also dig Cinemovil in the Raod to Roma extra. That itself could be a film concept.
