I would actually be kind of shocked if it wasn't pushed to 2010.

I thought the general assumption was that it would be released at the end of this year for Oscar qualification and critical consideration, then released wide (in a possibly different edit, as The New World) the first quarter of 2010. That the release date is in question suggests to me that the relationship between Tree of Life and Voyage of Time is as (or more) complex or unusual as has been rumored... or at least more challenging froma marketing perspective. Who knows. I can hardly stand the wait.

If you count The Voyage of Time as a separate film, he should release two in the next year.

I agree with the decision to delay the release if the edit isn't yet polished. The Extended Cut of The New World should have been the first and last. Hopefully we'll see The Tree of Life in Cannes (a Palme d'Or would be more meaningful, and more likely, than a fricking Oscar anyhow) but, if not, well hey.

The film opens documenting the origins of life, through the age of reptiles and mammals and then man. Progressively, we are swept through time until the 1950s, where the birth of life suddenly comes to seemingly pointless sickness and death. Poointless, that is, to young Jack, who is unaware of all that has led to this point and time, only to arrive to the tragedy he must come to grips with. This is the philosophical thrust of older Jack's struggle to coexist in a world that seemingly has little to no value for him. The "tree of life" is the framework of the story, how one thing leads to another, a miracle of growth and evolution, where nature is purposeful, and never random.

Christian Bale, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko will star in the new movie from legendary director Terrence Malick.

The untitled feature, which begins shooting this autumn, is described as a romantic drama and will be produced by Nicolas Gonda, Sarah Green and Bill Pohlad, and sold and distributed internationally by FilmNation Entertainment.

No, it would be tragic.
I might have found the strength to laugh about it 5 years from now.
Fortunately we have the photos to prove (or at least provide substantial evidence) that he has indeed been shooting one or two new films.

Anyway, the best thing about this news is that it suggests that The Tree of Life and/or Voyage of Time are just about complete.

I wonder if Malick is finally onto a moneymaker? A 'romantic drama' with a cast like that should attract enough mainstream attention to pay for itself.

Good to see Malick moving on to new projects so quickly now.

I heard a rumour a while ago that the first cut was 9 hours long, and that was before all of the second unit photography Malick wanted to use was incorporated. Given that The New World extended cut and The Thin Red Line clock in at around 170 minutes, and the scope of The Tree of Life as suggested by reports, a run time close to that wouldn't surprise me at all.

As for IMAX, Malick has apparently shot an IMAX companion piece to The Tree of Life called The Voyage of Time, which is (at least partially) shot on 70mm IMAX film, depicts stages in the evolution of life on earth, and is narrated by Brad Pitt. How it relates to TOL and whether footage is shared between the projects is still not clear.

VFX supervisor Mike Fink said that in the Empire Magazine interview where the cat was let out of the bag about 'dinosaurs', but since then others involved in this production have claimed that they hadn't head about such plans.
I'm guessing that it might have been an idea Malick mentioned to him in passing, rather than a certainty.

While I'm no Christian Bale fan - generally find him monotonous, boring and creepy, hence why American Psycho was a perfect fit - his performance in The New World is his most lovely and unmannered, so I'd look forward to another collaboration with Malick.
