I'm sure that's just an oversight in the press release.

Great, great news. I think that it's safe to assume that 2001 be from 65mm.

For once, I am highly intrigued to see what the extras will be, as the bog-standard, cookie-cutter, talking heads featurettes will not go will with Kubrick films. And please: no Schickel commentaries!

Do I have to sell my old Kubrick box-set now?

Christ. I'm sure I've spent more money on DVDs this year alone than I have any previous year. And now this comes along -- but I figured it was coming this year. Terrific news!

well, the thing about the old transfers is that they will be the full screen (full negative) transfers of his latter films (except for Full Metal Jacket, I believe)... the new ones will "preserve the theatrical" aspect ratio.

Will "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures" be available separately or only in the box set?

I think it was just a time thing. Maybe they couldn't make it this year and will most certainly rectify that in a year's time or something. But they are giving people the chance to ditch their snappers, which is great.
So Warner will make people double dip on BL and L? That doesn't sound too believable. It could just be that the Special Editions of these two titles simply aren't 2-discers.

It has a SRP on it so I'm sure it will be.

I quite like the artwork, not amazing, but it could have been a real disaster so I'm fairly pleased. 2001 is the best so far, the others are a bit... plain. Good to see Barry Lyndon, but no second disc, damn!

So, it's Clockwork Orange and not A Clockwork Orange?

Isn't Alex looking through the "A"

But if you look at the side of the image, there's no A in the title.

About the artwork: Oh fuck me, this is shitty artwork. What the fuck?

What's wrong with the original posters? And why can't we have a set where all the labels look the same? That's why I like my Kubrick set, it's all arranged neatly and it all looks good. But this is just stupid.

This is the part where I wish that Criterion would do a Kubrick set. ANGERRRR.

I thought this was strange at first too, but after further investigation, I found out that the 'A' primarily appeared in the on-screen title:

All of various posters eschewed the article, even those without the "Big A" art:

The original version of the DVD had it on the spine, but the later "digitally remastered" version did not, so this is really nothing new.

Very exciting news! I especially can't wait to finally see Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining in 1.85:1. I'm highly anticipating the specs on all. And for the record, through my eyes the covers posted are a vast improvement over the original releases. I'm a huge Stanley Kubrick fan, so this is probably the most exciting release of the year for me.

I hope it isn't deemed imprudent of me to remind my fellow cineastes that today is the maestro's birthday. I normally don't do this, but I thought it odd that none of today's posts made any allusions to it.

Happy birthday Stanley, wherever you may be! I sure as heck miss you. I, too, am very much looking forward to picking up the Blu-ray editions of the above-mentioned films.

I'm curious to see what will fill the second disc. I presume a bunch of unnecessary supplements (eg. impact the film has had on pop culture). If I remember correctly, doesn't "Life in Pictures" give insights to all the films? I guess a 2-disc set makes it that much more special!? Whatever.

Looks like Warners will release single-disc, repackaged editions of Barry Lyndon and Lolita in October.

I'm sure that's the case. Warner has been repacking snapper titles in keepcases for a while. I can't imagine that they would be reissuing/repromoting discs in the old packaging or with the old Kubrick Collection banner.

From the previously linked interview. So, did he simply overlook Lolita or it too still going to be 1.66:1 non-anamorphic?

One of the features for A Clockwork Orange should be a Malcolm McDowell commentary track. According to wikipedia's O Lucky Man entry:

Warner Bros. Home Video approached Malcolm McDowell and asked if he would do a commentary track for A Clockwork Orange to which he replied, "I will if I can also record a commentary track to O Lucky Man!". So a DVD will be released supposedly in 2007 along with a 2-disc special edition of "A Clockwork Orange".

Regarding Clockwork, it will be hard to top The Return of a Clockwork Orange from 2000.

An Examination of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange from BBC TV in 1972 would seem a must, but who knows.

And for 2001, I really hope that we see the rare 1968 behind-the-scenes piece, The Making of 2001.

What I want to know is it Arthur C. Clarke has participated in any of the features on 2001. In his foreword to a reissue of the novel, he highly praised the Criterion laserdisc.

2001: A Space Odyssey has a commentary track by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. I know because my company is doing the subtitles for the commentary.

Warner Brothers is doing subtitles for commentary now?
