Charlie Day as Vincent Hanna would be awesome. His comedic energy put towards the relatively more serious theatrics of a detective as addicted to his job as Hanna plays out in the book works for me.

Not sure if people have seen this video, or another one like it, but it's kind of fun to see all the locations where Heat was shot, and what's left of a lot of the different spaces where the film was made.

Lots of these are locations I've been by countless times, which explains the familiarity of a lot of the settings in the movie.

Gonna double down on this and say he should only cast comedians in the roles a la The Informant! with whoever plays Neil in the Matt Damon role.

Mann close to finishing the screenplay. I have all the faith he can pull it off, and maybe even top the book. It is otherwise hard to ignore the even greater possibility this gets turned down by Warner Brothers. I have little faith in them for obvious reasons, but there does lie the responsibility they will want to move forward on it if the project catches fire.

One reason I can think of WB pulling out is not getting in any kind of turf war with Disney about home video rights. Speaking of which, I am going to make an even bolder claim that I think Criterion will wind up putting Heat out themselves, if Mann at all is persuaded to redo the 4K transfer.

MGM/Amazon in play, after WB balked at the budget.

Odd parallel here with De Niro who was in a movie playing Frankenstein’s monster just before doing the first Heat.

I just got back from a 35mm screening of Heat, my first time seeing the film on anything other than VHS or DVD (something I did a lot as a teenager), which just goes to show how long it’s been since I’ve seen the film at all. My memory of the film’s visual look is that of being quite cool and neutralised, bordering on desaturated - but woah, was the 35mm print not that. Frequently golden skin tones, teal and green fluorescents, saturated primaries… if anything it reminded me of Robby Müller‘s work on Paris, Texas and To Live & Die in LA, and perhaps ironically, the Criterion grading on Thief. I can’t imagine seeing Heat any other way now, which is too bad given Mann clearly has designs otherwise based on the caps I’ve seen of the Blu and UHD.

I saw it twice in 35mm when it came out, and I also remember it being rather more colourful.

Damn, they’ll literally try to pass off anywhere as Los Angeles these days.
