I would have thought they'd have announced that along with Tabu and what not after the riots. The DVD still isn't available however so it could well be.

Bresson or Dreyer. The same picture was brought up on the Criterion facebook months ago and it came from the Joan version of one of those guys.

I remember Criterion - two years ago - saying that were looking to bring the Dreyer version (and Pandora's Box) out on Blu. Maybe we'll see near simultaneous releases or they've still not got round to it.

[Tongue in cheek] Here's how it will happen. Summer of 2012 MoC will release a dual format version of Dreyer's Passion. it will be widely hailed as definitive by the scions of the Interwebs, despite being Region B/2 locked. Four months later, Criterion will release a Blu-ray of the same work locked to Region A. Based on many screen caps spread all over the Web, there will be great hue and cry about black levels, contrast and tinting. Battle lines will be drawn with each side proclaiming "you're either with us or agin' us!".

Quietly the Germans will issue their own Blu-ray some six months later. The producer will be interviewed by Blu-ray.com while simultaneously posting at the sites of the cognoscenti his determination that his version is the "coolest, bestest ever" (loosely translated from the German) because Carl Theodor came to him in a dream and told him so. The Young Lions of Cinematic Purity will weigh that based on the examination of no fewer than three screen caps from unknown sources and despite apparent contrast issue in the German disc, it is in fact the "coolest, bestest ever" version of Dreyer's masterpiece and so there!

Then some sputtering old fool will weigh in proclaiming that you just can't do that by looking at screen caps. Much pointless verbiage will ensue because the sites of the cognoscenti aren't encumbered by 140-character text limits. Nothing will be resolved because everyone involved refuses to actually look at the damn film. The old fool will wind up with three Blu-rays of Passion just like he did with M wondering why he felt compelled to watch all three versions. I'd speculate that's fairly likely given that Criterion posted Adrian Utley's journey into the Criterion Closet relatively recently.

Dear peerpee, since you missed your chance with Two Lane Blacktop, you should think about maybe including something from avant-garde instrumental group Natural Snow Buildings, who released an entire album composed of three lengthy movements dedicated to Laurie Bird. Interesting stuff and I don't think it ever got more than a CD-R release-- the perfect time to license a bonus CD for the first time in MoC history? PM me if you need help tracking down a copy.

Well if you can fernagle this one through I hope you can get the Across the Border doc on Oates and the Hellman commentary track off the Anchor Bay release. It'll go along way to making up for being shut out at the Edinburgh festival a way back when it got pulled at the last moment. If it's all systems go for Cockfighting now can we also have Claire Denis' 'La Mort s'en fout' too?

Great news, and I hope the release will also include the Warren Oates documentary that was on the OOP Anchor Bay edition. I hope a release of China 9, Libery 37 is in the cards as well. I've been dying to see it for some time, yet I've decided to stay away from the various public domain releases, as they're all cut and/or pan and scan versions as far as I know.

Going from their recent surprising leniency with Cannibal Holocaust (i.e. passing everything but the death of the coatimundi, which couldn't possibly be defended under even the most liberal interpretation of the Animals Act), the BBFC seems to be taking a rather more relaxed view of the Animals Act - and indeed the Protection of Children Act, if the passing of In the Realm of the Senses and The Tin Drum uncut is anything to go by.

I suspect the calculation is that only an eccentric millionaire would try to bring about a private prosecution over these titles.

Oddly enough, it's actually much harder to prevent a video release than it is to prevent a cinema release - the Edinburgh cinema that refused to show Cockfighter did so because all it would take is one single complaint to the licensing authority, and they'd be required to explain themselves, on pain of losing their operating license if found to be in breach of the law. There's no equivalent of this process for video as far as I'm aware - you'd have to mount a full-scale prosecution, with all the expense that that entails.

Perhaps it is only me, but......
As I read various contributor's postings (finding the last one or two interesting/provocative), I often have no idea what film or DVD or person they are talking about, because they do not include that in the posting. Often the subject of the comment is different from the title of the thread. So I go back through prior postings, through what sometimes appears like a labyrinthine search, punctuated by other unrelated postings. Many times I just give up.
It will be nice if posters included in their postings the subject (DVD, film, person) they are referring to. It may take only two or three words, but it will make the posting self-contained, and make a lazy guy like me happy.

They are talking about Cockfighter (directed by Monte Hellman)
