I presume a picture of a thin red lion in Criterion's latest newsletter can be considered official confirmation that The Thin Red Line is coming soon, and in Blu.

Not only that, but the
Short Cuts reissue is actually just a new translucent keep case and Wacky C adorned liner. The disc is the same as the first printing.

Up until today, IMDB had Criterion as having the 2010 distribution rights to
The Four Feathers, but now no it's no longer listed on there

But they do have Von Sternberg's
Underworld and
The Docks of New York as CC titles =D>

Going by last month's precedent of getting the May release schedule announcement on Friday the 12th, I'm hopeful we'll get June's release schedule announcement today. Then again, they may wait until Monday since it's not a holiday this time.

Night Train to Munich (Reed)
The Leopard (Visconti)
The Bicycle Thieves (DeSica)
The Red Shoes (Powell and Pressburger)
I'll stick with these, except that it's highly doubtful that we'll see two catalog BDs. Plus, I think it's unlikely that we'll go two months without an IFC announcement. So I'll take out
Bicycle Thieves and put in
The Secret of the Grain. Since their output seems to have increased lately, I think we should add one more, so I'll guess ...
Mystery Train.
The big question, to me, is if
Night Train actually is announced, whether that is for DVD only or both DVD and BD.

Nice catch. I'm guessing both films on one disc (or two-disc set) as a "double feature," or perhaps
There Was a Father will be treated as a supplement. I believe Criterion has been sitting on a Donald Richie commentary for
The Only Son for years.

Best film news from Criterion since Make Way for Tomorrow was announced.
it could be two single releases like Made in USA and Two or Three Things. That I think is more likely than a double feature.
Or, the Only Son will be a packed to the gills two disc set, with supplements covering all of Ozu's films before Late Spring, and will be accompanied the same month by an Ozu sound films Eclipse set including There Was a Father and four from these six: What did the Lady Forget, Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family, Record of a Tenement Gentleman, A Hen in the Wind, The Munekata Sisters, The Flavor of Green Tea over Rice.

I will have to wait and see how it compares to the Ozu BFI releases, it seems! :-k

Maybe the delay of the BFI release of "Late Spring" is a good thing. It will give us time to see how Criterion will release "The Only Son". I was sure I was going to get the BFI "Late Spring" and the primary reason was to get "The Only Son". Now, I'm not sure anymore.

If There Was a Father is destined for the main line, this suggests that some serious clean-up work must have been done on the existing master, or they've found entirely new elements. Either way, this is very exciting news. I would have thought the existing transfer too poor for even the most apologetic Eclipse. These are both among Ozu's greatest films.

^ That's why I'm wondering if they might not treat it as a supplement on The Only Son.

I don't know if the old transfer would even be up to supplement level - the sound is pretty much completely destroyed.

They look so sad in that photograph. Like they're auditioning for an Ozu film instead of talking about one.

I just got home from an American Cinematheque double feature of "Taking Off" and "Catch-22". In-between the two films, screenwriter Larry Karaszewski, who was moderating a Q & A with Buck Henry, mentioned that Milos Forman told him that Criterion is currently prepping "Taking Off". =D>
