Gremillion? Hell yeah. That alone makes for a perfect month.

One new main line release? Don't put yourselves out, Criterion!

Like mfunk, I'm quite surprised to see only one new main line release (and the 2 upgrades are not what we can call the best editorial releases Criterion has in stock, nor movies that craved upgrades). A bit disappointing.

I'm mainly disappointed that there's technically not really any new cover art to complain about. Though Grémillon's DVD debut in the English-speaking world is certainly a momentous occasion!

Gremillon is amazing news, but I cannot express my displeasure that I have no cover art to complain of. It's why I like announcement day.

How do you get to see the bigger covers for the eclipse films? All I get to see is the slipcover.

You have to right click on the image details for the thumbnail covers, copy the address into your browser, and then remove '_w100' from the address.

Am I the only one still hoping BJM is a slipcase and there is a really cool cover with the crawling image on the real cover?

Can this be granted an exemption for the rule against putting Criterion titles in the worst cover art thread? Quite a disappointment considering what's available to choose from in the film and Its various marketing materials. What really kills it for me is the incredibly bland beige color scheme.

The disc art, interior art, and booklet art are all significantly better than the front cover

It seems now to be clear that Jonze, for whatever reason, was going for deliberately low-rent. It's a shame, considering that there is sooooo much beautiful imagery throughout the film to work with. But perhaps he just thought the maps and posters of dozens of Malkovichesses, etc were overdone

I know this cover has gotten a lot of hate, but I think the simplicity of the package is quite beautiful, and fits the film perfectly.

I don't know. Unless you're going to go to more mimetic extremes (like the Videodrome Beta packaging, or I Am Cuba's cigar box), I think one-thing-is-supposed-to-look-like-another cover designs often fall flat. This really falls between two stools, since it doesn't end up looking particularly like an academic text, what with the plastic case and Criterion's unbookish cover template fighting for attention, and what it's imitating is drab in the first place, which makes this all a lose-lose proposition. It's a clever idea that doesn't really work.
In its favour: it's marginally less ugly than the dayglo UK cover!

I agree with zedz. The Criterion CC cover is too conceptual and too literal. The film deserves better. Though the job is tough. It's not a film like The Wind Will Carry Us where there are one or more obvious and iconic images to work with.

Would he necessarily have anything to do with packaging? I didn't think Director Approved extended to marketing, unless you have an interview or something somewhere?

Easily the classiest month of covers in a long time. The Norman Mailer set is the best Eclipse cover ever, and Weekend is magnificent.
