Excellent month, will be getting them all. Even though I already have the Godard`s on R2. Have to keep the collection complete ;)
Human Condition might just turn out to be the release of the year.

Is this somehow a bad sign for the Eclipse project? The end of the series? Have they ever left their 2 month release rhythm?

This signals not just the end of the series, but, most likely, the end of mankind.

We went a few months without an Eclipse announcement last year as well.

Bergman - jan 07
malle - feb 07
Ozu - march 07 (delayed to june, iirc)
three month break
Bernard - July 07
Fuller - Aug 07
Saura - Sept 07
three month break
kurosawa - jan 08
Lubitsch - Feb 08
Klein - Mar 08 (delayed to May)
Ozu - Apr 08
three month break
Shepitko - July 08
Kaurismaki - Aug 08
Mizoguchi - Oct 08
two month break
Rossellini - Jan 09
Shimizu - Mar 09
Korda - May 09
two month break

Not unprecendented at this point. still disappointing, I'd love it if they'd commit more to eclipse. the every two months this year was a false trend, it seems. :p

I'm interested to see what they do with Alice in the Cities. Perhaps they might give it the blu-ray treatment. I thought of this film when MichaelB wrote about the 'physicality' of the film/medium showing up on the blu-ray edition of the Jeff Keen boxset. Being a B&W film shot on 16mm stock, the blu-ray treatment could offer a whole new viewing experience.

IMDB has a 2009 video listing for that film by Warner. So I would imagine it will part of a Barrymore set or be released via their Archive channel.

The current model for blu roll-out from BFI is much more adventurous than that of Criterion, so if we get a HD Wenders this year, you can bet your bottom dollar that it'll be Wings of Desire. It's pretty pointless trying to find patterns in such a small sample, but (if anything) Criterion seems to be moving toward even safer prestige picture (400 Blows/Last Year at Marienbad/Repulsion) territory, lately. Thankfully, the truly left-field bluray offerings of BFI (plus AE + MoC) have tended to be "all region".

As far as AitC goes, I just hope we end up getting some improvement over the R4 Madman which seemed a little ragged, even bearing in mind the fact that it was shot on 16mm with a faster film stock.

I have the Madman edition as well. I believe Axiom in the UK have the Wenders back-catalogue, so any Blu-ray should, by rights, come from them. I haven't read that Axiom are considering Blu-ray releases. Having said that, Secondrun lost the rights to BFI with Nighthawks/Strip Jack Naked, so you never know.

Pretty sure this is a Warner Archives title. You should check out their catalog. A lot of gems. Glenn Kenny recently wrote them up.

If it's still part of the Vestron library, it's at Lionsgate.
I thank heavens I still have my Vestron vhs, and the Kino John Huston & The Dubliners VHS. I put the two together and I've got my own budget version CC 2-disc set of The Dead.

It really is an incredible film.
THE DEAD is now available on iTunes via Lionsgate. But it's apparently full screen. If anyone here is still interested in buying or renting, can they please report back for sure? Thanks.

Incidentally, REPULSION hit iTunes (in what looks to be a new transfer, although I've never seen the DVD everyone despises) shortly before Criterion announced their edition. But I'm not implying this portends anything for THE DEAD...

I've posted it before, but the trailer for The Dead is as perfect for the film as it could be, I think.

The old DVD really should be thrown in for free with every purchase of the Criterion, as it has to be seen to be believed. I can't imagine a greater leap in quality than from that thing to a Criterion Blu-ray.

Yeah, that two minute preview makes it look like it's just the Vestron VHS transfer. I was afraid that Lionsgate must have this. Hopefully Criterion can license it and get their hands on some decent elements, since Lionsgate clearly doesn't have 'em.

Don't care about Godard but will definitely be getting Repulsion and the reissue of Mankind (the original one of the best blind buys I ever made). One film I'd love to see getting a CC release is the George C Scott film They Might Be Giants (1971) (owned by Universal I think); the original DVD is out of print and goes for ridiculous prices online.

Dreams is supposedly on the way after my film professor talked with Mr. Prince after his lecture on post 9/11 films like World Trade Center and United 93.

Fantastic news. Any idea if a Prince audio commentary will be included?

That would certainly squelch the idea (based on the Warner HTF chat) that the only Warner-licensed films will be coming from directors who have requested that their films be licensed to Criterion. Unless the ghost of Kurosawa is haunting George Feltenstein and demanding that he license Dreams to Criterion -- which would be pretty cool.

That would be the only acceptable reason for the licensing to me. :-"

I assumed that was what he asked, but maybe my film professor did not ask or only assumed that Prince would be working, maybe if he is there is only an essay by him? I dont have class again with this professor until Weds so I will find out then.

This summer would be absolutely the best ever if they got a chance to release A Man Escaped, Odd Man Out and Vivre sa Vie.
