That's unfortunate. The Rules of the Gamee package was one of the more unique packages in the collection. Kind of like the white keepcase that came with A Woman is a Woman.

I didn't pick up a copy since I already own it, but just imagine the same cover art, albeit w/wacky C instead of The Criterion Collection across the top. It's the exact same image otherwise.

Yeah, I heard on the .com forum that it is black/white and not a Blue image, because they took off the slip cover.

Technically, the image was always b&w, it was just the slipcover that was blue. I s'pose I oughta sell my old edition on ebay and use the money to buy the new packaging. I prefer the figure-8 cases, if only to preserve shelf space.

EDIT: The snapcase image is tinted blue. It's not as noticeable b/c the image is tinted, rather than a thick slipcover, but it's blue nonetheless.

The original Rules package isn't much thicker than your standard DVD case.

Well, it's digipak-thick. I'm not going to double-dip, anyway; I was just surprised to see it in a regular case, since I only thought they did that for films that were being re-released with a new print and/or extras, or a new dvd simultaneously with a blu-ray.

Makes you wonder if The Human Condition is going to be two figure 8 cases in Pigs, Pimps, Prostitutes type box.

Human Condition better be a digipack or its the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine).

They could pull a Painlevé and fit the whole trilogy in a snapcase.

No, there's also the guy that is "OUTRAGED" that Criterion is using plastic cases for their Blu-rays.

Have they finally found a standard BluRay format and stuck with it? Either way, the packaging on the SD definitely makes the BR look like crap.

Yes, they will be using the custom-made Scanavo clear plastic keepcases for all future Blu-ray releases, and will be repackaging most of the early Blu-ray releases in these as well.

I'm wondering, if they're going to standardize the line, and we're seeing that with the Playtime packaging now, are they going to retool the Last Metro and Last Year at Marienbad, too? Unfortunate, if so, and kind of missing the point: the initial packaging was just shoddy.

While I'm still turned off by the price of non-Criterion BDs, I must admit to being envious over the ability to have two discs worth of film and extras on one disc.

I'd just like to remind everyone that the Playtime SD package was a mostly blank white digi with two big splotches of primary colors on the inside. It's not like they ditched some grand, majestic artwork, people.

Jeff, do you or anyone else know when these repackaging will start happening? And is the only way to ensure getting them to find them in brick and mortar stores? The new Scanavo cases look great.

I don't pay more than $20 (and usually $10-$15) for non CC Blus. They are cheaper then DVDs were 5 years ago. I still don't get this argument. Especially from people that have the internet and a check/credit card. The Amazon Marketplace is your friend.

and I am not even talking about used discs.
