I quite like AMNSC. It's not amazing or anything, but it has its charm.

I too love The Best of Everything - a key 1950s Hollywood film, and one of the very best Fox films of the period - and I'm thrilled to learn of the blu. I had no idea Domino and david hare were also fans.

Definitely a Best of Everything fan, though I haven't visited it in a very long time.

Not sure what's going on with the subs now. They can't be burned in as Gary claims as there would need to be two video files for the English and French versions like The Bride Wore Black, but in this case there is only one. And sure enough the yellow subs are not the crappy looking jaggy SD type that were burned almost in the middle of the screen on TBWB, but are the same modern HD subs that are used for the white English track subs. So it looks like TT did the right thing here by only using the English language video with non-burned in subs and syncing up the French soundtrack to it. Unless I'm mistaken, there's no "English version" of Adele H on the disc, rather it's mostly in French and those scenes where English is spoken are given optional subtitles. IE there's only one version of the film included, no?

With Adele H, there are not 2 versions. There isn't an English version and a French version. There's one version where most dialogue is in French and some dialogue is in English. So the English subtitles for the French dialogue are yellow & burned in. There are additional optional white SDH subtitles for the English dialogue only. So if you watch the film with the SDH subtitles, there will be a mix of yellow & white subtitles. There is no way to watch the film with no subtitles at all.

The yellow subtitles on The Bride Wore Black were also a modern HD digital font, at least looking that way in the first capture on the DVDBeaver review. I don't see any jaggies in that capture, they look very much like the white subtitles. I now think what is happening is that MGM is creating new digital yellow subtitles for foreign language films (or foreign languages spoken during English films) and then burning them into the HD files they are giving to their licensees. So the subtitles aren't player generated, they were created in a computer at MGM & burned into the transfer.

See The McKenzie Break (where you can actually see some jaggies in the DVDBeaver capture) & Eat Drink Man Woman (the review described them as forced, but I suspect they are again digital subtitles burned into the transfer).

What I don't get is how other labels have licensed non-English films from MGM and released them with optional subtitles but when the label is TT, it's supposedly out of their hands and has to be nonremovable yellow subs or no release at all.

Right away I'm thinking of Shout's release of the Jean De Florette / Manon Of The Spring, which they were able to put out with optional white subs on both films

Forgive me, I assumed it was the same as TBWB.

Compare TBWB yellow subs to the Adele H. yellow subs; they're completely different, most notably in the modern 3D effect the Adele H. subs have. They're identical to the white subs on the disc, just yellow instead, whereas the yellow subs on TBWB are nothing like the white subs on that disc.

So far they're keeping mum on the issue of Amazon offering some of their titles direct. Apparently B&N, Best Buy, Deep Discount, ImportCDs and FYE are listing titles as well now.

Maybe they're dumping poorly-selling titles in an effort to get rid of stock before their contract is up?

If so, they're giving up on some of them pretty early. Even The Purple Rose of Cairo is up.

Regarding recent activities, or lack of thereof, apparently this was posted on Facebook (I'm quoting second hand):

"Twilight Time DVD Label: There will be an announcement at the end of next month that will alleviate the situation..."

Also, saw mention that everything should be shipped out by the end of the week. My orders seem to mostly ship on Thursdays, so will see.

It seems their releases are now being sold by other stores - Crimes & Misdemeanors is listed at Deep Discount, Import CDs, MovieMars, DVD Planet, etc.

The Driver appears to be going fast today with the new promo. Apparently down to 35 copies or so.
