But a lot of my DVDs that I have now were purchased used for anywhere from a cent to five dollars used on places like Amazon Marketplace. I just don't really have the wallet to start all over again paying $10-15 dollars a film, and getting about 1/10th of that back on the old discs I'm unloading.

Criterion said they will announce something "soon." I don't know much about it beyond that. I'm guessing that buying in brick and mortar stores or ordering the cases from Criterion (if that turns out to be an option) will be the only way to be sure.

It reminds me of the boring art you see in waiting rooms. Just looking at it is tedious.

The martini on the disc is a nice touch.

Their marketing strategy appears to consist of blinding consumers and subsequently hoping some inadvertently buy the title while visionlessly jaunting toward the exit

Whew. Glad I wasn't planning on buying that one or I'd be really upset. Did Criterion somehow lose all their interesting fonts and are now just using the ones that come with Microsoft Office for their covers?

I think I went blind there for a second. Unless there is a scene involving noodle art on a pumpkin that is completely inexcusable.

(Yes I know it's based on a poster, I'm complaining that far back.

The cover is actually more or less a modified screengrab from the opening title sequence, so brace yourselves.

Now that's a marketing strategy Domino. They wont even be able to see that they are paying $39.95 either.

Now that the cover can be added into the equation it is official: this is one of the most pathetic Criterion releases. Definitely the most irritating of the year.

I'm pretty sure the text and images were in motion in the actual title sequence; it doesn't really make sense to pull this out as a static image. Given that one thing the film has going for it is the lush visuals (marigolds etc), this cover seems perversely misguided.

You can watch those faux-Saul Bass/"The Dot and the Line Goes East" opening credits (as well as the rest of the movie) here. So I guess we can't blame Criterion for an awful design, but we can blame them for laziness. Although points, I guess, for avoiding any hint of Orientalism.

I can't believe CC changed that functional blue background of the film's title sequence (where the cover image appears) to that awful pumpkin color.

And for those not familiar with the wonderful little classic that Matt just mentioned, ladies and gentlemen I give you,

The Dot And The Line.

Schreck, that has to be one of the funniest posts, ever. I'm ashamed to admit I've never seen The Dot and the Line before. I hope the folks at the CC are following this thread. Bravo!~ =D> I literally lost it, i.e. (coffee spewing from my nose) I think I may owe work a new keyboard. At the "wild and unkempt squibble part".
