A lot of these projects from Franco as a director sound pretty interesting on paper but the reviews for his last two features; The Broken Tower and Sal were generally terrible. I'm still somewhat interested in his adaptation of Child of God but not expecting much. He seems to be attracted to potentially great material. Maybe his work would be better received if he devoted more time to each project rather than be so prolific.

New Fincher is a Bobby Fischer Biopic with Tobey Maguire

No it's not... the article states it's being directed by Ed Zwick.

My bad rushing out the door this morning just read the Facebook summary blurb and got excited. Zwick is the worst. Sorry for the blue balls.

I still want to see Francophrenia out of morbid curiosity. It sounds like the absolute height of pointlessness, which is most of the appeal for me. But I imagine they're not even trying for regular distribution, so I'm probably out of luck.

In the wake of The Master, it looks like PTA's once-rumored Pynchon adaptation is moving closer to reality.

Richard Linklater finished shooting Before Midnight, his latest in the Before Sunrise series. Linklater, Delpy, an Hawke were all saying within the last week that it was still in the scripting phase, so this comes as a welcome surprise, certainly the highlight of my day.

Christian Slater on board for Von Trier's Nymphomaniac:

In the same article, Shia Labeouf is quoted as saying:

"I sent him videotapes of me and my girlfriend having sex and that's how I got the job," the actor told late-night US talk show host Chelsea Handler.

Very modest of him.

Apparently making home sex tapes was a requirement for casting for anyone who's going to have on camera sex in the film. Lars Von Trier is such a fascinating provocateur that I get warm fuzzies whenever I read something like this that don't quickly go away. This is such an intriguing project - I really hope it doesn't become a total disaster to get to see it uncut theatrically in the U.S...

After Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action, I think the idea of another Looney Tunes movie makes us all queasy (though I know Joe Dante has his supporters here). But what if that movie were written by Jenny Slate, former SNL cast member and co-creator of the impossibly cute Marcel the Shell With Shoes On?

Yeah, it will probably still be unwatchable.

I thought Back in Action had a number of good points though I don't think mentally I will never get used to the new actors. I even sometimes find it difficult in the classics when Fudd is played by Blanc.

It's not really "new" or "in production" -- as far as I know, anyway -- but this seems like as good as place as any to ask: what the hell happened to Lodge Kerrigan's Rebecca H. (Return to the Dogs)? From what I can tell, it played at Cannes in 2010 and that was it. Wild Bunch was the film's sales agent, but it's nowhere to be found on their site.

Perhaps Wild Bunch couldn't sell it so they handed it back to the production companies. People think Kenneth Lonergan has it rough. Lodge Kerrigan's tale of woe makes Lonergan's look like Green Eggs and Ham.

Maybe, but then why didn't it at least make the rounds on the festival circuit? I'm guessing there was some issue with the producers (a legal dispute, money not paid, etc.), but I was wondering if anyone had heard anything specific. The other possibility is that the director himself took it in for more work -- as Van Damme did with the movie he brought to Cannes that year (probably the first time JCVD has been invoked alongside Lodge Kerrigan) -- but Kerrigan gave a couple of interviews there and he sounded pretty satisfied.

Bille August is re-adapting Nabokov's Laughter in the Dark - good luck to him!

BTW can anyone familiar with the novel opine on the Tony Richardson version? I think VN disagreed characteristically strongly with at least some aspects of it, but the casting alone makes me want to see it - has there ever been a video release in any territory?

As amazing as that would be, I'm afraid the cast in that article is rather confusingly that of August's current film Night Train to Lisbon, which is mentioned in that paragraph; "no word yet on casting for Laughter in the Dark"
