This relates to Matt's post a couple of pages back about no Preminger on the horizon: James Quandt's notes on the forthcoming Preminger retro at the Cinematheque Ontario indicate in no uncertain terms that the Preminger estate would not approve a screening of Skidoo, so a Criterion DVD (or any official release, for that matter) seems unlikely, despite CC's relationship with Paramount. I was pretty sure this was the case before, but it is nice to have official confirmation. Still doesn't excuse no Bonjour Tristesse, though.

Maybe I'm just missing something, but I fail to see what control the Premingers would have over a film they don't own. It's Paramount's property, is it not? Sure, they can bitch and moan but I don't see why Paramount would let that stop them.

I mean, Beatrice Welles rose a stink over what versions of Touch of Evil could/should be released but Universal went ahead and threw them all out there anyway eventually. Similar situation?

I'm assuming Paramount only has USA rights. There have been a number of domestic SKIDOO screenings over the last few years. The Preminger Estate probably controls other territories, including Canada.

Universal "settled" with Beatrice, paying her a pretty big chunk of change so they could get the release out the door. Paramount may not want to do the same thing, for what is ultimately a pretty marginal release.

The following Oshima films are playing BAM/PFA with new prints with Janus/Criterion logos:

A Treatise on Japanese Bawdy Song (1967)
The Sun's Burial (1960)
Pleasures of the Flesh (1965)
A Town of Love and Hope (1959)
A Cruel Story of Youth (1960)
Double Suicide: Japanese Summer (1967)
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983)
Night and Fog in Japan (1960)
Violence at Noon (1966)

I suspecting nice Criterions and Eclipse sets

Looks like you can go here to vote for the next Criterion Blu Ray release.

I saw the Violence at Noon print when it played there a couple of weeks ago: it was gorgeous; entirely spotless, easily one of the nicest b+W prints I've ever seen in the theatre.

So does this mean it will be released through Criterion's mainline if released by them?

Golly! I wish I had known that a week-and-a-half ago.

Any word on the status of the New Yorker titles up for grabs? I would love to see Criterion pick up some of their titles, including Celine and Julie Go Boating, Edvard Munch, and A Man Escaped (which already seems to be in the works).

Edvard Munch is not a New Yorker property; they just distribute the DVD. Project X owns the film, and they've done such a good job with Watkins' films.

Got this reply from Mulvaney:
Hi Timo,

Thanks for your email! Yes, Chantal Akerman's JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES will be released in September of this year.

The next Godard release will most likely be VIVRE SA VIE, after the July 2009 releases of MADE IN USA and 2 OR 3 THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER.

We hope to release a box set with the early short works of Martin Scorsese sometime next year.

Thanks for your interest in Criterion, and please feel free to email me should you have further questions!

Sincerely,
Jon Mulvaney
Nice to hear about the actual release month of Jeanne Dielman.
Too bad though that the Scorsese shorts are still so far away...

Does that mean they'll probably be Eclipse?

They'd have to be retarded. The guy donates his time to record commentaries and interviews for other people's work which they release, and then they don't bother having him discuss his own work? That would make me scream.

Random speculation will be no fun for September, now that we know that Wings of Desire, That Hamilton Woman, and Jeanne Dielman will be coming out. Though not confirmed, I'd also put money on Paris, Texas to complement Wings.

I believe the shorts in question are less than 180 minutes total. If they release this on Eclipse they are wasting a flimsy Eclipse packaging on something that surely calls for a creative digipak.

Why the assumption the Scorsese Shorts will be an Eclipse release?

I saw Cruel Story, Double Suicide, and Pleasures of the Flesh at the American Cinematheque two weeks ago. Prints look like they're ready to go. Looked as nice as when I saw other new Janus prints waiting for release.

Unfortunately, the best film of the two nights I went, The Christain Rebel, still had a mediocre print. It didn't hurt the strength of the film one bit.

How about a Julien Duvivier Eclipse set?

La belle équipe
Le golem
La fin du jour
Poil de carotte
Voici le temps des assassins...
Un carnet de bal

Well, basically, that's the ones just released in France by Carlotta.

Here's your Eclipse box:

The Sun's Burial (1960)
A Town of Love and Hope (1959)
A Cruel Story of Youth (1960)
Night and Fog in Japan (1960)

And didn't Oshima also direct a faux movie trailer as a first film?

Also, Duvivier's Carrot Top is coming to DVD through Facets.

I actually meant the Chantal Akerman since you listed so many coming out at once.
