Four Feathers but no Thief of Bagdad upgrade....that's a bit disappointing. They must be waiting for me to open my still sealed copy of the DVD before making the announcement!

Island of Lost Souls! That's about all I want, though. I'm glad to see Kuroneko get a release, but I have the MOC already. I'm interested to see the Antonioni and Kaurismaki, but I can wait.

Island of Lost Souls is the only essential purchase for me...though I'll probably get the Antonioni and Shindo, too.

Anyone who says the Leningrad Cowboys set is not an essential purchase obviously haven't seen the movies.

I was silently hoping they'd give us a Sisters upgrade for October. I hope we won't have to wait another year for that to happen.

Dazed and Confused is another one I want to upgrade, but it looks like selling my pristine 2-DVD on Amazon would get me approximately enough money to buy a sandwich. I paid $25 for that sucker. Oh well, at least I've only ever bought it once.

This only makes me upset that Human Condition didn't get a blu-ray, and now MOC and Criterion Hara-Kiris? Oh well. Also, I would have preferred Slacker to Dazed upgrade, but I understand the financials.

Never saw the appeal, but seriously, it's pretty goofy.

I keep hoping every month, they'll upgrade the Dassin titles.

A little disappointed that I Married a Witch isn't coming out in October...

The announcements of Kuroneko and The Four Feathers mean that Y tu mamá también, Wild Strawberries, and Bitter Rice are the only titles from the Wacky New Year's drawing that haven't been announced. I think that the November/December lineup looks pretty clear. That's when Criterion likes to release some heavy hitters, a boxed set, and some titles with broader mainstream appeal for the holiday season. Usually only a couple of titles trickle into December. Besides Y tu mamá también, Wild Strawberries, and Bitter Rice, the Three Colors Trilogy and The Game seem like sure bets. Wouldn't be terribly surprised to see some old Hollywood like Design for Living or I Married a Witch sneak in there too.

The Soft Skin probably has a chance of being released before the end of the year, as well.

And there are the Hitchcocks, Lady Vanishes is due for an upgrade as the only title left that was upgraded to SD and has not been moved to blu as well. I'd love to see Foreign Correspondent released before the end of the year. A Hitchcock Box would be amazing, or another box ala BBS that no one sees coming. There's also a few John Ford's they could release, not to mention the Chaplins and bluray upgrades of the Wes Anderson films.

Of all the above, I think Lady Vanishes and a Chaplin are probably most likely to be included in the Nov/Dec lineup with Jeff's list. Hopefully City Lights.

I think we'll see a Chaplin for November too, since they've put them out in about six month intervals so far. There are also a few titles up on Hulu that I can't imagine Criterion would pass on the chance to put out on disc- Quadrophenia, Breaker Morant, Godzilla, Cure, and The Immortal Story come to mind- but I don't think we have a good grasp on how long a lead there might be between uploading a digital copy and a full release.

I wonder if we'll see I married a Witch on the Mainline or as part of a "Rene Clair in America" eclipse set.

I think it's the only American Clair they have plus these Hill films are unlikely to be relegated to Eclipse. I expect all of them will be given a similar treatment to the one for Stagecoach.

It might be worth noting that I Married a Witch is evidently the second most popular movie on their Hulu channel right now- if they're using it to test the waters, that certainly bodes well for a disc release.

I think it is highly likely that Quadrophenia will show in the next two remaining months. It would be a huge holiday seller.

They have the Clair film "The Ghost Goes West" from the London Films catalog. It's not a title that I see them releasing on their own. I imagine it will be included as a bonus film in the supplements of I Married a Witch.

Has anyone seen The Four Feathers? Is it actually any good? I've been a bit wary of the Korda stuff. Thief of Bagdad was overrated and That Hamilton Woman is one of the worst in the collection.

It's hilarious how willing people are to continually re-purchase both this and Fear and Loathing.
I showed my wife and she rolled her eyes so far into her head I thought she actually died. She's made fun of me endlessly for having bought it 3 times already....but I honestly don't know if this is one that will require an upgrade. Will have to wait for reviews to see. I've not been obsessed with rebuying everything that's upgraded to blu - I can't afford all the ones I don't have in any form as it is. But this does have a particular soft spot for me as the single greatest evocation of my high school experience set to film. it's soundtrack is my high school soundtrack.

it's better than both of those films, and is a perfectly fine film, if unexceptional (except for its color photography).

Wasn`t there Brazil that got an SD upgrade back in 2006 as well?

On another, there was a question on another forum if there`s a chance of The Tree Of Life getting a Criterion release?
does anyone know anything about the odds of that happening?

Brazil wasn't really an upgrade, just a rerelease of Disc 1 from the set with an anamorphic transfer.

Tree of Life is already coming from Fox later this year.

What about The Soft Skin for a November/December release? My comment above must have not been noticed. I guess a better question would be, how much time is there usually between a Janus/Rialto run of a film at Film Forum in NYC and its subsequent Criterion release?

Different Korda. I definitely prefer 4F to those films though even if it's still a wait until it's dead cheap type of purchase.
