I could be wrong, but it seems like K. Kurosawa's Seance was released by HVE quite some time after HVE released Seance On a Wet Afternoon...so I'm not certain that HVE thought that far ahead.

Looking on the speculation threads, there's nothing in the Announced Certainties list that interests me, but there's plenty of Distinct Certainties that I'd like:

Bicycle Thieves on Blu would be a welcome catalogue upgrade. Is it too early for a Senso Blu from Criterion?

It's probably too soon for a second Eclipse release of Rossellini's History films or the Bergman/Rossellini set.

I just hope more deserving films (Kapo) don't get dumped on the Arthouse line when the extras already exist for them and there's already an English friendly release about. Why bother releasing it, when it already has a release, if you aren't going to give it the Criterion treatment?

Can I ask why Criterion don't release many silents? Not profitable enough? Don't have silent cinema fans working for them? Kino snaps up the rights too quickly?

Most silent films not already in Kino's hands are public domain; Criterion doesn't do public domain titles as anything but extras except in completely bizarre situations.

Actually, they are working on quite a few of them. Stroheims, Von Sternbergs, The Phantom Chariot, and ofcourse, the Chaplins. I think the reason is (aside from rights), is the age of the prints and amount of restoration needed. They just don't release films until they have a satisfactory product to present.

It seems likely that Following will be announced. I could see IFC pressuring Criterion to release Following around the release date of Inception.There will be lots of press surrounding Nolan in the media that could give Following a sales boost. (At least I'm sure that's what the IFC execs think)

Yeh, Criterion would deserve every last complain they get if they threw those films into an Eclipse release. I hope when they do that set that they'll go the whole hog and release all five films: Stromboli, Europa '51, Viaggio in Italia, Giovanna d'Arco al rogo, and La paura, and of course at least include the segment from Siamo donne.

I thought it was the general consensus that they would end up on the Eclipse line...or maybe Stromboli would get a stand alone and the rest would go eclipse. I'd love to see them all get their own releases instead though. That'd be absolutely wonderful. I just assumed it was too much to expect.

I'd be surprised if we see a set like that this year - the newest Rosselini box needs time to penetrate the market. He's hardly a director under-represented by Criterion: three stand-alone films, a three-film boxset, and a three-film Eclipse.

Would be another Kapoesque dropping off the ball though with extras already done for most of the films. I daresay they are far too important for the Eclipse line anyway.

mostly it was all i could think of offhand other than Chaplin that might be a new boxset announcement. I'd never be more happy to be wrong than with that one. I would think we'll get a new Eclipse announcement tomorrow since June is an off month. seems to be the pattern. I keep waiting for some kind of silent collection, or a random noir set or something from Universal. I hope they get nutty and surprise us.

So you pretty much only like Italian movies?

Spine Numbers 524 & 525? Where are they?

Hate to undercut Criterion's Ozu releases, as I'm glad Region 1 is getting these pre-war Ozu films - but The Only Son is already confirmed to be part of BFI's awesome Ozu lineup (paired with a Blu-Ray of Late Spring, who could pass that up?), and There Was a Father is surely forthcoming (likely attached to another excellent Blu). Aside from the extras, which look nice, I'm not sure I can justify buying these.

The Guitry set on the other hand - yes! Excellent! But I still have misgivings. It's a cheaper alternative to the Gaumont box, which is great, though it is missing three of the films included there. Hoping they release all of his "golden age" stuff soon, but Criterion has a habit of breaking these things up and failing to complete them (Eisenstein, Shimizu, etc).

The individual movies in the Ozu set have those spine numbers...it doesn't appear that the box will have a spine number...which is uncharacteristic for Criterion.
