Hateful Eight is the snub there, but this is honestly the one category I could see the nominations actually going to the five films that I feel really deserve it (assuming Hateful Eight ends up in the race in Bridge of Spies' place).

Between this and the Llewyn Davis discussion, it's apparently "Disagree Completely with the Forum on the Aesthetic Merits of Recent Critical Darlings Day". I'm not really sure how they fit that name onto one space of a calendar.

This will come down to Lubezki and Deakins, I think. Likely Lubezki wins.

Oscars is another story, though, since the general Academy votes for the final award, not just cinematographers.

Sorry if this was posted somewhere else, but here is a panel discussion with Ridley Scott, Tarantino and other directors with films in the awards market this year.

As usual Ridley is great. Iñárritu and Tarantino also have lots of interesting things to say. Russell doesn't add much to the conversation and actually says he likes the "happy ending" of the theatrical cut of "Blade Runner" that was imposed on Scott by producers. Ridley does a double-take when he hears that, but holds his tongue.

The BAFTA nominations are in.

I expected the directors' nominations will be replicated by the Academy, unless Miller can unseat Haynes; The Hateful Eight seems like it's locked-out of the major awards (maybe Best Score, as the Oscars can finally reward Morricone properly?) and who knew Cranston in Trumbo was becoming so strong?

So for BAFTA there is not a single major nomination for any film not in the English language?

There rarely is nowadays. The Baftas were very open to non-English language cinema at the beginning but now they are just another Oscars-lite.

Not excited for another Inarritu Oscar sweep.

It's been several years since I watched a Golden Globes telecast, but I was really amazed by the amateurish, truly poor quality of the production, which mirrors the general sloppiness of the nominations and awards themselves, but seemed like something they had under control in years past. Is this a new development, or can anyone masochistic enough to watch regular confirm that this is pretty standard. I was fine with Denzel's highlight reel, but other than that, this seemed like something a major network would be embarrassed to air.

I think the vibe they've always gone for is "super casual version of the Oscars". This year was really, really heavy on the swearing/censorship, mind; there were numerous genuinely just terrible segments.

(Why on Earth is Mel Gibson presenting Mad Max? The crew and the film made a very clear effort to distance itself from him and this is literally the first time he's done anything related to Fury Road at all and all it says to me is that it will leave voters in a bad mind when considering the movie in a few weeks)

Oscar nominations are this Thursday so Mel's appearance shouldn't affect them, votes on the other hand...
I used to watch pretty regularly and it probably was a little more formal but since Pia Zadora won a Globe I've never taken them that seriously. This year was leaning more towards the Independent Spirit Awards in black tie, I actually tuned in hoping Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer would be drunk.

Yep. Oscar nomination voting ended on Friday, so Mel will have no influence there.

I still think it was a mistake putting him up - surely the film's producers didn't elect him as the representative? I had basically completely forgotten of any possible association he may have had with the film until this reminded me of it.

DGAs: Inarritu, McCarthy, McKay, Miller, Scott

Alright, time for Oscar predictions!

F-ing hell, really? The DGA is a bunch of morons, which is not surprising considering the winners of the past, oh, decades. George Miller is the only one in that bunch that did truly outstanding work in their respective films.

Iñárritu is the only one who belongs there. My guess is that McKay will *not* get a nomination for the Oscars; the other four will. As for who will replace him? Spielberg is a fair guess; I wish it were Haynes, but Carol seems to be getting slaughtered in the guilds.

This is shaping up to be one of the worst Awards Seasons in recent history (thankfully The Revenant won the Golden Globe).
