Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
At least now we all know what the major trigger of the Criterionforum is.
I would also advise anybody to get a region free BD-player. If all fails, you still get the DVDs and the book - and can sell the Blu-Rays on ebay, give them to your significant other as a christmas present or use them as slightly more dangerous frisbees.
On the rights issues: could it be that a deal as in "We get the US rights, but you can have the Euro-rights for (insert rare Rivette here)" was reached? Are things done like that? Because if so, that would be quite impressive and make me rather happy.

Is the artwork final? Because now Duelle and Noroît appear in reverse order. (Duelle was shot and edited before Noroît, not to mention being number 2 in the original four-film series; Noroît is number 3).

But the 'N' in Noroît is more reachy and needs the extra space it gets from being listed first.

Only about 24 hours left on the 75 quid early bird price. After some heavy procrastination on my part, I finally ordered my set this morning, so now I can finally settle in and start getting excited for it to arrive.

Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
The new restoration of Out 1 is being shown in full at the Prince Charles Cinema on the weekend of November 28 and 29.
This is only the second time that it's been screened in a British cinema.

Wish I lived in London. Do you have any behind the scenes information you could share about how the collection is coming together?MichaelB wrote:The new restoration of Out 1 is being shown in full at the Prince Charles Cinema on the weekend of November 28 and 29.

Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
In the Bfi texts and interviews book Rivette talks about en ending to Out 1 with JP Léaud that was removed because of his concern for Léaud's state of mind, does that ending still exist? I seem to remember Rivette saying that Léaud had some kind of breakdown after filming Out 1? On the one had I'm very curious to see the alternative ending, on the other hand it feels like the wishes of Rivette and Léaud should be respected, I just hope the footage is preserved somewhere!

Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
It's not an alternative ending. There was a roughly 10 minute scene towards the beginning of the final episode where Léaud character loses his mind in his apartment over the whole 13 business (it originally happened after the scene between Ogier and Lafont at the beach house). It's the main reason the eight episode is significantly shorter than the rest nowadays.
Besides removing that scene, Rivette did quite a bit of (minor) editing to the 1971 film, the version that exists now has a 1989 copyright (there were only two public showings of the "original" film, the first at the Maison de la Culture de Le Havre in september 1971 and the second at the 1989 Rotterdam Film Festival - the edits were done after Rotterdam) and it's for all intents and purposes the "true" version of the film and the one that most people are familiar with (theatrical showings, french vhs release, italian tv broadcast, etc).
As for Léaud, I don't think he suffered a mental breakdown after filming Out 1, but he was very affected by Truffaut's death in the 80's.

Is it likely that the Rivette features included with the release of Out 1 will be released separately at a later stage?

From what I understand, no. At least not on Blu.

As noted earlier in this thread, Arrow have confirmed on Facebook that the titles in this set would not be made available individually.

There is the modest chance they'll be put out on BD in the US or elsewhere by someone else, though (hey, if Criterion is finally starting to bring out the Rivette, who knows?)

If you have any interest in this set at all, and are posting on this forum, pre-order the set. Seriously, this and this are what your fate holds if you let it go out of print without buying. If there's any chance you'll ever want it, buy it now. If you decide you don't like it, you can surely make your money back online.Aunt Peg wrote:Is it likely that the Rivette features included with the release of Out 1 will be released separately at a later stage?

Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
Is anyone buying 2?
This forum convinced me the moment this set was announced as I figured Criterion would eventually release those Mizoguchi films. As for the Boro set, I was never a fan-so I had little interest to begin with, but it would have been a sweet investment...

Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
I always buy two copies of these large collectible sets. One copy is for protection just in case something happens with the first one (though this hasn't ever come up yet), and you can usually sell it for enough to offset the cost of both of them, if not all of your Arrow purchases for the next year! I've sold:
the Boro set for $500
the Vincent Price set for $200
the Dr. Phibes set for $50
Videodrome for $150
Stray Cat Rock for $65

I pre-ordered the Rivette set on 16 August, together with the Yoshida set (with Battles the following day).

3 Billion souls in region B (roughly) and only 3,000 wish to own these films. Simply mind boggling!

Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
Boro set for $500? I am surprised someone would pay so much since 100% of the disc content if available for a fraction of that price (not to mention Boro is not exactly a household name).swo17 wrote:I always buy two copies of these large collectible sets. I missed out on the Boro set completely because I was stingy enough to order from Zavvi!
I am also kicking myself for not pre-ordering Videodrome, at the time I thought my Criterion set was good enough!
I wouldn't bet on the Yoshida and Rivette sets to command huge premiums when they go OOP, but some people are crazy enough to collect them just based on their rarity...

Re: The Jacques Rivette Collection
I was a click away from getting the Boro set (when it was a Kickstarter, so only £60 at the time) and more recently with Videodrome (£24.99 on Amazon), but decided in all honesty didn't really want them that much (on the other hand, I was lucky enough to get a last minute copy of Late Mizoguchi...same with the recent Metropolis steelbook). I wish I had the heart to buy these sets and scalp someone later on, but I think I'd be worried my investment wouldn't pay off for some reason (especially on the more expensive sets). I didn't realise Boro would fetch such a high price later on (as someone pointed out, you can still get all the discs separately with booklets intact...so it's odd they're selling for so much), but I did think Videodrome might sell for 2 or 3 times its worth somewhere down the line (even more in a year or two)...but for some reason I didn't pull the trigger on the latter. I think it was my conscience telling me I'd probably end up keeping it for myself even though I'm not a huge Cronenberg fan! Only because it looks like a stunning set, but I didn't love the film enough (I will end up getting the Amaray at some point next year though).perkizitore wrote:Boro set for $500? As for encouraging others to scalp...it depends what your conscience tells you. If 1500 people did that with one of these upcoming limited sets (i.e. buy a second copy to sell), said set would be officially OOP quite quickly and those people would be hiking up the price of the spare copies they had. There'd be a lot of tears, with some people getting copies at a fair price through negotiation and others paying way over the odds - a free-for-all. Is it really worth all that hassle? I'd like to think the fact I didn't cash in on the Videodrome set means that one Cronenberg fan out there got a £24.99 copy (or copies) I had almost bought to sell for profit. I'd like to think there aren't hundreds of people out there buying up as many copies as they can afford just so they can double or triple their money in a month or two, ripping off collectors in the process (a similar practice to ticket touting at music events). I'll admit it's not so bad on smaller items such as steelbooks or single films (like Videodrome) but some of the larger box sets go for eye-watering prices.
I would love to get the Yoshida and Rivette sets as soon as possible, but simply can't afford either right now. I do hope they'll still be in stock at around the RRP in a month or two, and not sold out and only available from some dude on eBay asking for £100+ (Yoshida) or £200+ (Rivette). I would hope these new sets sell gradually like the Six Gothic Tales set did, but when Arrow outright admit that neither set will see its contents get separate reissues that causes people to get a bit anxious and panic buy (or buy to resell).

I know someone who sold his copy for over £900 (nearly $1400)!perkizitore wrote:Boro set for $500? I am surprised someone would pay so much since 100% of the disc content if available for a fraction of that price (not to mention Boro is not exactly a household name).
Mind you, I effectively paid more for mine, as I put £1,000 into the Kickstarter. But that also bought me a credit on the Goto restoration.

I pre-ordered the Rivette set a couple of months ago, but have never been in on any of these limited Arrow sets before (nor any U.K. limited anything before, really, for that matter). How quickly do they tend to sell out? I have no real frame of reference.
(This information will affect how and when I preorder Beyond the Valley of the Dolls--I need to learn this lesson quickly!)

I think this is their fastest seller, but Hellraiser sold out either just before or just after the content that went on the discs was finished!I pre-ordered the Rivette set a couple of months ago, but have never been in on any of these limited Arrow sets before (nor any U.K. limited anything before, really, for that matter). Arrow just sent this email:
We would like to update you on a recent release date change regarding your purchase of THE JACQUES RIVETTE COLLECTION.
The restoration processes for the films have taken a little longer than expected, and have impacted the initally planned release date. The Collection will now be released by retailers on January 18th, 2016. However, we are certain to be shipping your orders from our webstore before this date.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused with this delayed release date. Upon reviewing the fully restored materials, we are extremely pleased with the result and hope that when the Collection is with you, you will thoroughly enjoy the fully restored films.
Thanks for your understanding, and feel free to follow our Facebook and Twitter pages for all the latest information regarding this, and any of our other releases.

Damn, I'd hoped to use the Christmas break to get through the films in the set!
