Not a peep in the press release.
Perhaps I should have saved that question for a later date...doh

Absolutely, but I'll take what I can get. I'm amazed this is coming at all!
Fantastic news. A new cut of The New World! Hell yeah!
Probably my favourite film of the decade.

I'm a big New World fan, so I have to ask: what was missing from the theatrical version? More shots of grass blowing in the wind? More indians raising their faces to the sky? More dolly water shots? What is it exactly you guys are looking forward to?

The Universe has tried to fuck me again, but I have persevered! Just this last week I bought Delicatessen for some outrageous price (even after the 20% discount) and just a DAY later the new edition was announced. I had been planning to buy The New World, too, within the next couple of days, so thank god.
I still haven't seen it, though, so I'll be renting it sometime between now and October.

Well on thedigitalbits, Bill states that according to his sources a blu-ray release is not on the slate. Guess we can't give up hope yet, but that's annoying if it is the case...

Disappointing, since Warner previously stated something to the effect that every special edition DVD from this year forward would be accompanied by a high-def release.

It's difficult for me to talk about Malick without drowning in hyperbole, but to keep it simple: I'm looking forward to the bliss lasting just 30 minutes longer.

I am glad that the extended cut is being actually released (pretty shocking to me actually). I still haven't got myself to watch the normal cut on my 30 inch TV because of how my feelings were after seeing it on the big screen and how I like to look back on it thinking about it in the theater. Now I can watch this version without thinking about that since it is a different cut. Well, that is how I rationalize it at least.

I have a friend who saw the film in France (on the biggest screen in the country!) and he said that most of the people who went and saw it thought it sucked because they wanted to see a big action movie (something like Brotherhood of the Wolf, I imagine). Most, if not all, of the advertising material for the film really didn't do an accurate job... it either looked like a cheesy period romance film or a crappy historical epic.
Why couldn't they just give this thing a nice minimal cover? something like the map from the opening credits... that would make sense.

I was personally hoping for a blurry photo of Malick taken from someone's cell phone camera.
This cover needs to be immediately posted in the worst covers thread. What an epic fail.

I debated which thread deserved it most. Saturday night Blockbuster parents are gonna be pissed if they rent this for a
Last of the Mohicans experience.

The title placement and image also make it seem like The New World: The Extended Cut is the full name of the film.

Obviously "extended cut" refers to additional bloodletting, if the cover image is any indication.
In which case I am hella pumped, bros.

I got a riddle for you guys:
Q. What do Colin Ferrell and the members of the Criterion Forum have in common?
A. They're both concerned about the OAR.

A quick trip over to IMDb reveals she's starring in three upcoming indie features as well as producing a documentary about her people. She's also preparing for her upcoming engagement to me.

Kilcher was born in Schweigmatt, Germany; she speaks English, a little German and limited Algonquian (which she learned for her part in The New World). Her name means "Golden Eagle". Her father is a Peruvian artist of Quechua / Huachipaeri descent. Her mother, Saskia Kilcher, a human-rights activist of Swiss descent, was born in Alaska and raised in Switzerland. Kilcher's maternal grandfather was Ray 'Pirate' Genet, a famous Alaskan mountaineer. She is the cousin of singer Jewel Kilcher.
I'VE BEEN PRAYING FOR A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE FOR EONS! =D>

Not only is that cover terrible, the designer must also be incredibly lazy. That exact same cover was used as a Best Buy exclusive slipcover when the original DVD was released (minus the "extended cut" text, of course).

Nice one. And the boy wins a cigar (or coconut) according to choice.

I vaguely remember Lubezki mentioning that the opening sequence of the film originally lasted over 10 minutes (he had mentioned that the underwater footage was stunning, or something along those lines)...Does anybody have any recollection of this? It'd be nice to see it as part of the new extended cut.

It's not a bad review, but I almost want to link to it in the "Rediculous" thread for these lines:
"Malick's
a prosaic visual director, and if it takes him double-digit year spans to construct films with as much brevity and poise as The New World, then let's not rush the man between these gaps."
"So, let's talk
brass tax here."
