Warner Brothers is doing subtitles for commentary now?
I'm guessing for him, English to Tagalog.

Ah. I believe only one studio here (Dreamworks) does that. It would be great if all the other ones did so as well.

It's actually English to English. It's CLOSE-CAPTIONING really.

Agreed, I'm very disappointed that
Barry Lyndon isn't getting the deluxe treatment like the other films in this collection. And while I think
Lolita is one of the weaker Kubricks, I think it's a very good film with strong performances that also deserves a special edition release. Oh well, I'm not too surprised I suppose since half of the people who claim to be Kubrick fans probably haven't even seen
Barry Lyndon or
Lolita.

From
The Digital Bits:
We've learned that Warner Home Video will finally release those long-awaited Stanley Kubrick special editions on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD on 10/23! These will include 2001: A Space Odyssey (2.20 - 16x9), A Clockwork Orange (1.66 - 16x9), Eyes Wide Shut (1.78 - 16x9 - we believe this is the uncensored version), Full Metal Jacket (1.78 - 16x9 - already available in high-def) and The Shining (1.78 - 16x9)! Each of these will be a 2-disc set (SRP $26.99 each) except for Full Metal Jacket, which is a single-disc deluxe edition. You'll also be able to buy the DVDs in a new Warner Home Video Director's Series: Stanley Kubrick Collection box set (SRP $79.92) that includes the previously released Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures DVD. The high-def versions will all sell for SRP $28.99 each. 2-disc DVD and high-def versions of Lolita and Barry Lyndon are still TBD. We expect the official press release to be made available in the next couple of days.

TBD is To Be Decided, yes? Or am I slow?

Yes, but I thought it was all but confirmed that Barry & Lolita wouldn't be 2-disc'ers (which is fine by me so long as they're reissued with anamorphic transfers and make it on to high def formats).

TBD is "To be determined," as in the staff at The Digital Bits has yet to determine based on the vague information released so far by Warner what the status of Barry Lyndon and Lolita is. They are almost certainly not two-disc special editions though, and I would be very surprised if they are anamorphic. Unfortunately, it looks most likely that Warner will repackage the existing discs in keepcases and repromote them with the new Kubrick set.

Great extras on The Shining! I'm particularly keen to see what they have in store for Wendy Carlos featurette.

Think they'll have a Walter Carlos featurette on Clockwork?

Sucks to see hack biographer Baxter on the commentary. Was LoBrutto not available?

I'm sure Jan Harlan and Christiane Kubrick approved of Baxter since Harlan is producing these DVDs, but I'm surprised they would do so if Baxter's book is inaccurate or unflattering.

Burbank, Calif. August 6, 2007 – On October 23, Warner Home Video will launch the first in their new series featuring influential films from some of history's greatest directors. Sweet Fancy Moses! Those are some wonderful supplements, far exceeding my expectations. It does indeed look like Barry Lyndon and Lolita remain completely untouched, but perhaps this will sell well enough to nudge Warner to look at giving them the same treatment somewhere down the line.

The Full Metal Jacket commentary sounds very interesting, if it was recorded as a group.

Those Channel 4 docs are substantial:
2001: The Making of a Myth - 80 min.
Still Tickin': The Return of A Clockwork Orange - 55 min.
The Last Movie: Stanley Kubrick and Eyes Wide Shut - 60 min.

It's just interesting for D'Onofrio and Ermey alone. Especially if it turns out to be a group commentary. I've always wondered what the relationship between R. Lee and the other actors in the film were in and after production.

Do I understand correctly that HD versions will not be available as a (discounted) set?

Just a member of the press. Even though WHV post-dated it, that release went out today.
denti alligator wrote:Do I understand correctly that HD versions will not be available as a (discounted) set?
That's my understanding too. Does anyone think the HD versions will have all the supplements?

Two nitpicky questions here:
Will the Full Metal Jacket: Deluxe Edition be available separate from the box set? There was earlier confusion about this.
Will the DVD's in the box set be thinpacks or full size keepcases? You never know with WHV.
Either way, I have been waiting for this box set for a while, and I am super-psyched!
