If they really got 250 10-minute auditions for commentary tracks, that would be insane (it would mean that 250 people all saw Crisis, et al, knew that Criterion was interested in fanboy commentary tracks, felt like they knew enough about the film and Bergman in general to make a commentary track, and were willing to go through the effort to make a 10-minute audition for one--seems highly improbable given how few people have even blogged about the films). And even if they did, you could probably throw half of them out after the first 60 seconds, because the people couldn't talk very well (gotta have a good speaking voice), or had nothing to say.
If it they were 250 good 10-minute auditions, well, you would have a genuine problem, but it would be exactly the sort of problem that you would want to have.

How dare you. You don't think I'd be a good audio commentator for Eclipse? Don't you know who I am? I have a film school degree! I've been posting to this forum for over a year! I buy and rent DVDs all the time! Are you saying that with all of these qualifications Criterion (and the general public at large) wouldn't LOVE to hear me talk about Ingmar Bergman's first film as I watch it for the first time? I'm offended by your overall negativity, and I take it as a personal affront. Never mind the fact that many people don't even watch commentaries presented by, you know, important filmmakers and critics, shouldn't the fact that I'm a fan justify having my thoughts and opinions published under the banner of the most respected home video label in the world? Hmph. Naive indeed. Good day to you, sir.domino harvey wrote:I think some of you are a little naive...

Reading the blog entry again, does anyone else find this quote a bit ambiguous:
Personally i would much prefer box sets (preferably nice thin digipaks) and that seems to make more sense to me as each month has its own theme (presumably).
Has it been officially confirmed they are definitely box sets of 3-5 films, or individual releases, either way?Retail pricing for each set will average under $15 per disc

It hasn't been officially confirmed, but it would make perfect sense for Criterion to release them only as box sets. If there is only one title a person is interested in in the box, they will have to buy the whole box to get it. That way, Criterion sells 5 (or 3 or 4 or however many they include) DVDs every time they sell a box instead of just that single DVD. Including it in a box with a more well-known title makes releasing a completely unknown title much less of a risk.Has it been officially confirmed they are definitely box sets of 3-5 films, or individual releases, either way?

Early Bergman is up for pre-order on Amazon.ca only as a boxset. The individual titles aren't listed. Not an official confirmation, but close.

I've seen Bernard's Les Miserables (unsubbed, but I'm familiar with the novel) and am definitely looking forward to hearing more thoughts about it when it's released. I enjoyed the first half, much less the second, but there's much to admire about the film (lighting and location shooting, especially.) There's a lot of off center composition and skewed camera angles used in the film, which definitely adds to the emotional "Hugo" effect. However, if you didn't care for, say, Renoir's Les Bas-fonds, I can't say this film will do the trick for you either (it seemed a very similar toned, though larger scale). Haven't seen Wooden Crosses, but I imagine it's more my style.

US amazon has the Bergman as well.
I wonder if Criterion is planning on releasing a lot of silent films on Eclipse. If they have them, it would make a lot of sense, since they can really only get away with releasing the more famous ones in the main label.

I'm thinking they will release Ozu's silents on Eclipse with the exceptions of I Was Born, but... as a Criterion. They are likely to focus on his later masterpieces such as Late Autumn, The End of Summer, An Autumn Afternoon, Tokyo Twilight, Early Spring, Equinox Flower, still not on DVD in R1. We are still waiting for silent releases such as Phantom Chariot, Cabiria and Eisenstein silents. It would be awesome with they worked up a deal with Kino and released a Soviet avante-garde set. Like some Dovzhenko, Vertov, Pudovkin and/or others.

It's kind of funny the box is listed as "criterion collection" which kinda makes the whole new brand thingy exercise pointless, unless retailers actually start calling them "Eclipse".Jun-Dai wrote:US amazon has the Bergman as well.

Would you prefer "Criterion Collection" or "Image Entertainment"? Please note Release Date: 3/13/2007 - 14 days earlier than Amazon's listing!godardslave wrote:It's kind of funny the box is listed as "criterion collection" which kinda makes the whole new brand thingy exercise pointless, unless retailers actually start calling them "Eclipse".Jun-Dai wrote:US amazon has the Bergman as well.

Not much of an unveiling:

Criterion Presents Eclipse
The Criterion Collection is pleased to announce the launch of its new DVD line, Eclipse, beginning with the March 27 release of the five-disc Series 1: Early Bergman. The mission statement says it well: "Eclipse presents a selection of lost, forgotten, or overshadowed films in simple, affordable editions. Each series is a brief cinematheque retrospective for the adventurous home viewer." The news was made public this week on Criterion's blog, On Five, which you can read here, and a preliminary sales information sheet was released last Friday--click here to see a copy.
