Noticed that amazon and dvdempire have changed the release date for "The Delirious Fictions Of William Klein" to May 20th. Criterion store indicates April 8th (as does image-entertainment)...

So looks pretty likely it won't be March 25th (which dvdplanet still indicates).

No wonder Criterion didn't announce any Eclipse sets the last two months. The Klein set is their March, April, and May release!

Tamara has confirmed that Peter Greenaway's, "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover" will see a Criterion release in the future. Very exciting news, at least to me!

I heard a rumor that Criterion is planning to release, "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover." Before I throw a party and get too excited, is this rumor true?

Her Response:

We do intend to release that film on DVD, but a release date hasn't been scheduled yet. Please keep checking back. I hope this helps, and thanks for your email!

Whoa! That is great news. Would it be too much to dream about a box set with The Baby of Macon and Prospero's Books? Outstanding news!

Where's the decent Cook? The last Region 1 or Region 0 release is the non-anamorphic Anchor Bay release.

I take that back...just looked at the case and the release is 16X9...I was confusing it with some of the pre-Zeitgeist Greenaway releases.

Those Fox Lorbers are horrible. Thank God we got upgrades.

For whatever it's worth, that Anchor Bay release of The Cook, the Thief was pretty bare bones (perhaps some trailers). I have to think there's plenty of contextual material that could be included with a deluxe edition of this. And a box set including what I noted would be magnificent.

If Cook is for real, then there's 100% a Miramax deal going on.

You're right, and I'm sure Greenaway would get involved as he did with the BFI/Zeitgeist releases. But I just want to see Macon, Prospero, Drowning, and parts 2 and 3 of Tulse Luper to get decent releases, stuffed to the gills with extras or not!

Prospero's Books might still be with Miramax, and if so I can't see Criterion not releasing it as well. Macon and Drowning are a little more sticky, I think, so who knows?

I can't really explain how happy this makes me. I've been suggesting and waiting for this for years. Love the film.

God, I hope so! LOVE Cook, Thief... (even though I have the R4 release already, I'll definitely upgrade), so glad to see Greenaway will finally come to Criterion.

I assume the Miramax deal is also responsible for Zentropa and Belle de jour. Is anyone keeping track of the number that have been announced (including the WKW).

Ongoing discussion here; so far the only (reasonably) confirmed titles that I know of are Zentropa, Cook, and Chungking; is that a Freudian slip on Belle, juste?

And checking the Miramax thread, it does seem like you have the inside scoop on Belle, juste, so that's another at the very least solid candidate.

Yes, I can't believe it, and so briefly after the confirmation that something by Rivette will be released. Finally they acknowledge the importance of two of the most outstanding directors around today. But "Cook"? If there's one Greenaway film that doesn't need urgent updating, it's this one (apart from the two BFI/Zeitgeist features). Apart from "Tulse Luper", "Macon" and "Prospero", which would be the most important to get a release, I'd even be more happy about a decent version of "Drowning by Numbers" or "The Pillow Book" than just another "Cook" disc. The existing R1 is more than fine, and probably the end result of CC duplicating this would be a transfer as similar to the old one as with the two "Thief of Bagdad" discs. But ok, perhaps "Cook" is just the start, or it will be part of a Greenaway Eclipse set. If they release it standalone, I bet we will get to see a 2-disc edition with at least one of his short films from the period as an extra. "Death in the Seine", please!

The same argument would apply to anything in the Eclipse Kurosawa set in my view. Greenaway is, though not forgotten, very much overshadowed. I guess even of those people interested in his work, only a very small minority here have been able to see "Tulse Luper" Pt.2&3 , for example.
As to the multiple incarnations of his other films: "Drowning by numbers" was only released in Italy and Australia in rather sub-standard editions, the Aussie disc of "Macon" is a catastrophe (to put it mildly), and "Pillow Book" has the aspect ratio(s) fiddled with. All these need remaking, Eclipse or not. Most of the discs mentioned here are OOP on top of it. Putting "Cook" into Eclipse would perhaps make it easier to sell such a set with some of his other, less known films. But I wouldn't have a problem with it being released in the main collection if at least some of the other films would come out, too.

There's no way Cook will be an Eclipse title, and I would be very, very disappointed if it were, because that would mean no Greenaway involvement, no shorts, none of the special features that would make Criterion releasing this title worthwhile. It's true that it has already been released in a fine (transfer-wise) R1 edition, but it hasn't been given an SE treatment anywhere in the world and the long OOP R1 goes for a lot of money. Some lesser-known/-exposed Greenaway would be nice, and hopefully this is indeed a first step to some more needy titles getting released by CC, but I'm very happy to see this get an SE release and can understand why Criterion would want to start out with one of PG's most popular titles.
