All fair points! And I can confirm from first hand viewing the Studio Canal RAN restoration trailer that played at Film Forum in 2016 was using a dated master, and looked nothing like the new color timing.

If you can get past Jeffrey Wells' usual bloviating, apparently the Warner BD of 2001 is NOT the Nolan version, so hopefully the pages of pearl-clutching over teal colour timing can now be laid to rest...

Well I just received the disc this morning. I want to be transparent that I am NOT an expert on this stuff. I'm also watching it in broad daylight and would like to revisit at night.

Anyway, I've sampled a few of the scenes, and my take is that the color of the disc is somewhere between the old disc and trailer, but maybe a slight bit closer to thetrailer .

I will say that at first glance, the 2007 BD based on those videos looks a bit too blue. If you watch the trailer at :45 and see the waitress grabbing the pen, the new disc is far less blue but absolutely does NOT have the yellow sheen to it. The colors lean towards the trailer, but have the general "brightness" of the old disc (more dull). In the first scene of human dialogue, we get long shots in a pure white room, and those pink chairs, and from my perspective they basically look the same they always have. The whites are WHITE in this scene. There are some space station scenes where the white isn't as white, but the interiors certainly look pure white as they should.

There's also the scene in the trailer where the waitress walks upside down. It is just NOT that yellow on the actual disc.

There is other good news: the film opens with the black overture for a few minutes, and goes into the original MGM logo. No new Warner logo to be seen anywhere.

That's my take. My plasma was professionally calibrated, and I'm comparing it to the youtube video on my laptop.

Does the new disc preserve the tear in the image that went across the screen during the opening DAWN OF MAN montage of desert imagery, which the Nolan version went out of its way to keep?

Bottom-line, I guess -- is there any need to get this new Blu-Ray if I've already got the old one?

Okay, I guess I'm going to have to eat my own words about the colour-timing. Let the endless debate now rage. This is what I get for trusting Jeffrey Wells.

I mean it definitely does not match the trailer. Screencap 7 clearly shows a dark blue opening for the ship. The trailer at 35 seconds clearly has that cap as yellow-leaning. Screencap 6 also appears in both the caps review and the trailer, and clearly leans more "correct" than "piss yellow."

Remember the screen captures from UHD is not accurately representative of what you will see on your 4K TV. The HDR frame is tone-mapped to an SDR picture that is only as good as the algorithm can achieve.

Honestly at this point, I feel pretty confident in my earlier conclusion saying that the old blu ray is just too blue. Look at the last cap on caps-a-holic, in the bedroom.

Just based on the caps, I'm leaning towards this feeling too. The new color scheme feels yellow-er, but it seems to be this way only by comparison. It doesn't seem yellow like a Ritrovata stuff, just warmer.

It's so wonderful to find out that all the exhaustive bellyaching here was a complete waste of time. Even though it's just a pic he snapped off his TV, what Nick posted above is incredibly encouraging

Well, it was just another case of a crappy trailer used by the studio for advertising. They should know better, and we probably should too, but it's not unsurprising for such a treasured movie that an unfaithful trailer (in hindsight) sparks worried discussions.
Now, I just hope the BD translates this correctly, and not like what Warner did with The Matrix HDR remaster.

The comments I made above were in reference to the BD (I don't have a 4k tv). Still haven't gotten a chance to watch in dark, but the temperature of caps-a-holic and Nick's screenshot match what I see as well.

Looks like the UHD disc was officially delayed to November 20th but some people's (including mine) Amazon preorders shipped on time. The delay was merely due to not being able to produce enough in time, which is hopefully a great sign for both this release and the format at large. Mine shipped from California via UPS Next Day Air, so Amazon definitely seems to have exhausted whatever limited supply they did have, and seems like they'll just be shipping them as they get more stock available

I'm getting mine early - tomorrow, in fact. Wicked.

5/5 in all categories but extras (4/5) for the UHD from Blu-ray.com - same score for the regular Blu's transfer too

I gave the BD a quick spin, and the 2 lossless soundtracks seemed quite different to me. The overture is much brighter on the Remixed track than on the 1968 one, as if the 1968 is, let's say, more muffled. The opening credits are closer to each other though in tone, but the remixed track packs just so much punch altogether, especially regarding low end and any percussive music. I don't think I heard any of the high-end distorsion Bill Hunt mentioned in his review, but that's not where I'm the most experienced, hearing (and tech) wise.

I didn't have any issue with the color timing though I'm not the most familiar (at all) with the movie. But there wasn't anything that felt strange, or biased, or anything.

In any case, this seems just great, and I'm quite eager to revisit the movie entirely.

I don't have a 4K TV yet, but this is looking like a definite buy when I do get one. I'm going to hold off in the meantime - I've been catching 70mm screenings of this nearly once a year anyway, so I can wait.

Check the sequence at approximately 1:24:47 in Gold Tod Me To, there's a few seconds of a big eye close-up from the trippy scene in 2001.
