I did hear something about CBS doing tests for this in widescreen, but it was probably just forum talk. Surely Lynch would not allow it (it's not like this was a Super35 show)?

I might have a bash at an alternative cut of FWWM which adds all the new scenes that relate to Laura's story arc and all the post-Black Lodge material (Annie in the hospital was confirmed in the teaser, so the script scene with Cooper on the bathroom floor should feature in there too) but going by the script, the stuff with Truman, Josie and Pete Martell isn't vital to the film (seeing as it is Laura's film really). I think that might be quite a neat cut without feeling too padded out.

Official announcement:

HOLLYWOOD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Twenty-five years after the shocking murder of Laura Palmer in the acclaimed series from legendary filmmaker David Lynch and writer/producer Mark Frost, CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution will release TWIN PEAKS – THE ENTIRE MYSTERY.

Arriving for the first time on stunning High Definition Blu-ray with English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio on July 29th, this comprehensive collection contains every episode from the complete television series; both the U.S. and international versions of the series’ Pilot; the North American Blu-ray debut of Lynch’s follow-up feature Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me; and nearly 90 minutes of deleted and alternate scenes from the film. The set also features newly transferred Log Lady introductions for each episode; picture upgrades to many shots in the TV series; a new featurette with Lynch and the actors who portrayed the Palmer family which includes a mesmerizing return to the lives of their characters today; and hours of never-before-released material that dives into the fascinating story behind the celebrated pop culture classic.

Along with a newly transferred version of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, created from a 4K scan of the original negative, TWIN PEAKS – THE ENTIRE MYSTERY Blu-ray box set boasts the long-awaited missing pieces from the original version of the film – nearly an hour-and-a-half of deleted/alternate scenes from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me – often referred to as the “holy grail” of Twin Peaks fandom. This feature-length experience has been directed and edited by Lynch exclusively for this release. Capping off more than 30 deleted/alternate scenes is an epilogue providing a fascinating glimpse beyond the cliffhanger finale of the TV series.

“During the last days in the life of Laura Palmer many things happened, which have never been seen before,” said David Lynch. “They're here now alongside the new transfer of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Twin Peaks, the television series.”

“We set the bar very high with our prior complete series TWIN PEAKS DVD Gold Box,” said Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager, CBS Home Entertainment. “THE ENTIRE MYSTERY Blu-ray had to be spectacular in terms of both content and presentation. We are confident that we hit the mark and are bringing the fans something very special. None of this could have been possible without the day-to-day involvement of David Lynch.”

TWIN PEAKS – THE ENTIRE MYSTERY is loaded with special features. In the two-part feature “Between Two Worlds,” Lynch himself interviews the Palmer family (Leland, Sarah and daughter Laura) about their current existence in this life and the next, and follows up with a discussion with the actors who portray them. TWIN PEAKS – THE ENTIRE MYSTERY also features “Moving Through Time: Fire Walk With Me Memories,” an exclusive retrospective documentary featuring interviews with cast and crew who recount the making of the Twin Peaks movie and working with David Lynch. The collection also features high-definition versions of the Log Lady episode introductions, transferred from recently unearthed 16mm film negative, a selection of newly discovered deleted scenes and outtakes from the television series, and three Twin Peaks photo galleries with over 130 behind-the-scenes images from David Lynch’s personal never-before-released collection. Also new to this release are 10 vignettes of iconic Twin Peaks themes called “Atmospherics.” Each features a unique montage of music, dialogue and video (including some rare outtakes) that appear as both menu backgrounds and as their own textless experience to further immerse fans in the mysterious world of Twin Peaks.

Additionally, the set features a massive collection of pre-existing special features, some of which have been re-mastered in high definition exclusively for this release, including the award-winning four-part documentary “Secrets From Another Place: Creating Twin Peaks,” and a newly extended version of the Gold Box featurette “A Slice of Lynch,” featuring the complete and uncut conversation between David Lynch and actors Kyle MacLachlan and Mädchen Amick. Additionally, this 10-disc set houses an extraordinary archive of special features culled from the entire history of Twin Peaks on home video, including featurettes, cast and crew interviews, promotional reels, archival deleted scenes...and much, much more.

Winning a Golden Globe® for Best Television Series - Drama in 1991, and a fixture in all-time top TV series lists from TIME, Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide, Twin Peaks follows the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town who are stunned after the homecoming queen Laura Palmer is suddenly found murdered. The investigation that follows engenders an eerie chain of events with cataclysmic results felt across the entire town. The series features an ensemble cast including Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean, Sheryl Lee, Sherilyn Fenn, Lara Flynn Boyle, Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook, Richard Beymer, Ray Wise, Peggy Lipton and Warren Frost. Although shot after the series ended, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is the prequel to the television series and focuses on the seven days leading up to Laura Palmer’s death. Many of the TV series cast members reprise their roles in the film and are joined by others including Kiefer Sutherland, David Bowie, Chris Isaak and Harry Dean Stanton.

TWIN PEAKS – THE ENTIRE MYSTERY will be available in 1080p with English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (Series and Feature), original English Stereo 2.0 (Series and Feature), Latin American Spanish Mono (Series), Latin American Spanish Stereo (Feature), Brazilian Portuguese Mono (Series), French Mono (Series), French 5.1 (Feature), Italian Mono (Series), Italian Stereo (Feature), German Mono (Series), German 5.1 (Feature), Castilian Mono (Series), Castilian Stereo (Feature), Japanese Mono (Series), and Japanese Stereo (Feature). I wonder why only select episodes have previews and recaps- it seems odd that they would be made for some but not others.

Interesting that they've obscured the difference between Seasons One and Two, and just numbered every episode in order. Did they do the same with the Gold Box?

Yeah, they did. I went into the series fairly blind, and didn't realize until somewhere around episode 13 or 14 that I had transitioned into the second season.

As someone who still has labeled and numbered copies of the original broadcast episodes on VHS I have never gotten used to the numbering that doesn't count "the pilot" as episode 1.

Damn. If I'm not reading too much into that, sounds like the deleted scene presentation might end with some new footage, which Lynch had been rumored (and debunked, and then rumored again) to be shooting. Also, "feature-length experience" sounds like it could be something a bit more than just a series of cut scenes, no?

I would assume that this is just the Annie in the hospital scene and Cooper on the bathroom floor.

The epilogue quoted in the press release is likely to refer to the post-Black Lodge scenes that Lynch and Engels wrote into the FWWM script (edit: what John Cope said).

What I haven't seen mentioned on this forum before is that Engels told an interviewer that Harley Peyton had what Engels considered the best idea for a third season had ABC renewed the show back then: the first 20 mins of the season three opener would have resolved all cliffhangers from season two, then they'd have gone to the commercial break, then the episode would have continued with a brief black screen, then the caption 25 years later. Obviously in practice this would work much better if they did this now but Lynch has ruled out a third season.

The cut scenes are incredible to have in any form, of course, but it'd be even more interesting to have them presented in a Lynch-constructed piece, something akin to what PTA did with the extra footage on The Master blu-ray.

Not really. It says right on the DVDs which are Season 1 or Season 2, although they use a continuous system of numbering the episodes.

It sounds as if it is going to be in the same vein as the "More Things That Happened" 75 minute compilation of deleted scenes on the US disc of Inland Empire. Which I'm actually excited about as I kind of liked "More Things That Happened" even more than I did Inland Empire, and felt that Lynch really came into his own when unconstrained by any need to form a kind of narrative throughline and instead recontextualise deleted scenes into something else entirely.

Also, as much as this new set sounds great, I still need to keep my UK Universal DVDs of Season 1 of Twin Peaks for all of their commentary tracks! I'm going to end up with as many copies of Twin Peaks as I do of the Alien films at this rate! :D

Interesting that the official announcement lists the MSRP at $109.99 in the U.S., but Amazon lists it at $134.99. One of these must be wrong. Hopefully, it's Amazon.

Cheaper, too! Will be $74.95 including shipping to the US. Hmm. Will wait out the whole MSRP situation with US Amazon, but that's a $25 savings including PA's 6% sales tax...

If you've read what they had planned for the end of Season 2 before Lynch came on board, you'd know that whatever was planned by them for Season 3 would've driven it even further away from the great show it was.

Words can't describe how much I'm looking forward to this set. Haven't watched the show for 12 years, and this'll be the best excuse to revisit it. Oh, and would people mind using spoiler tags when mentioning the content of deleted scenes? Cheers.

Having reread the FWWM script just now, I think Lynch has done an excellent job editing the film down to the length stipulated by the producers. I think other than the post-Episode 29 scenes, it'd only make sense to extend some existing scenes for further clarity and perhaps to add the "Norwegian dialogue" scene if it is indeed as good as Grace Zabriskie says it is. It'd provide a nice contrast to the harrowing dirty fingernails sequence. It certainly wouldn't make any sense to include the deleted scenes with other series regulars because they are simply surplus to Laura's story and make the film far too long. I reckon a version of FWWM that is about 10-15 minutes longer would work quite nicely. But if the script is anything to go by, Lynch was absolutely right to remove the vast majority of the extra material shot.

Odd, the MSRP has now dropped to $129.99. $90.99 with the 30% discount. Wonder why it'd drop if it's dropping to yet another inaccurate figure?

I watched this as a kid and revisited the first season with my roommate roughly a decade ago. I'm anxious to watch it again.

I'm also curoius as to whether anyone here has read the tie-in book The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer? I read a few pages of my father's copy when I was younger and remember it coming like soft-core porn.
