It'll be $37 plus tax with coupon at the next Criterion sale in November

That's the most annoying argument whenever we discuss MSRPs. We're just talking about the base price structure, not what we'll actually be paying.

They had to make up the $20 MSRP from those Oct Universal titles somewhere!

Those'll be $11 plus tax with coupon at the next Criterion sale in November

But all joking aside - they're going to be a pretty great deal, and will make Something Wild seem even more overpriced.

Then I don't get what your issue is? You don't think the pricetag is justified? I find the MSRP to be irrelevant since I am never ever paying that price for any Criterion ever, either it's in print and there is some sort of discount, or it's out of print and often going for OVER MSRP...

The price we will all pay in some future sale is greater than that of comparable releases by the same company of the same level of films/extras

The MSRP will always have a relative effect on any discounted price. Of course the price will always be lower than the MSRP, and in the case of sales, much lower; however, that 50% off is still discounted from the MSRP. Thus, a higher MSRP will always lead to higher prices for a particular release, whether it's on sale or not.

Right, and if anyone feels that $100 MSRP and $37 in real life is too high for that set then I invite them to time travel to when I paid $125 for the CAV Evita Criterion...

I guess I don't have a hard time seeing the value in that release - still there at $100 instead of $80. And lest anyone think I'm just an apologist I called them out for the barebones titles for October being at $40 rather than $30. Is there not a precedence for 3-4 film sets landing either at $80 or $100 depending on presumably the costs to assemble the set, transfers and features?

I am sure that on the announcement day, I saw the SRP for John Cassavetes: Five Films set was 99.95! Today, after seeing all these posts, I checked this morning and found the current SRP to be $124.95!!! Am I being wrong in thinking that the SRP was in the lower range on last Monday? :(

no, you're wrong, announcement day had the set at 124.95, same as the DVD.

Might we also consider that licensing costs have an effect on a product's MSRP. That could be why some single-disc DVD releases like Hiroshima Mon Amour, Wild Strawberries, and Le Doulos have SRPs of $39.99 instead of $29.99. It doesn't cost the same amount to license every film.

Which, in todays dollars, had the buying power of $190 (or thereabouts).

I can see why one might want to head back in time to the day of that purchase.

Yeah I wouldn't mind the not having to pay rent aspect of 1997, but then again I'd also be back living at home...

Barnes & Noble sent out an email this morning that they will be offering The Devil's Backbone a week earlier at 50% off.

Barnes & Noble sale has been extended through August 5th. Still short of Seconds but I'll take it.

I've noticed Sundays and Cybèle's DVD MSRP is 24.95, which is 5 dollars cheaper than most of Criterion's DVDs, so why is the blu-ray regularly priced at 39.95 and not 5 dollars chaper as well? They must have their reasons for the different DVD pricing, so why don't the same reasons apply for the BD?

What's the reasoning for a 3 disc set to cost $125? What's so different from say brakhage? Is there a precedent?

Wow, I didn't even look at the price. What the devil, this is going to cost the same as the Tati set?

Total runtime for all of the films is about as long as for the Tati set.

I suspect you also know that factoring in supplemental materials, it's not even close. I'm going to get both sets, but let's address this disparity honestly
