If that's real I'll put my money down right now, even though I'm not such a huge fan of Belly of an Architect. Wasn't A Zed and Two Noughts re-released fairly recently though?

Yeah, there's a bunch of small things that make me think it might be a fake. Sent her an email inquiring about why she's saying Criterion contracted her for the artwork.

The artist isn't saying that at all. These are mock-ups to show potential customers what she can do. Read her resume-- any graphic designer who was contracted by Criterion would immediately update their resume to reflect that, especially when their biggest gig so far is a brochure about deer or something

Exactly. Zeitgeist's edition of Zed and Two Noughts is still in print and was released just about a year ago. I'm not convinced on this one.

EDIT: Although that does look quite an amount of work to just be fan art.

The special features listed on Zed appear to be similar to the Zeitgeist (though not identical), but the give-away that this is fake is that the trailer for Draughtsman's Contract appears on the Zed DVD. Criterion usually only puts trailers for the film contained on the DVD as a special feature. Am I wrong?

No, and if CC released these three films it would be one of the greatest disappointments imaginable. These three are about the only ones that are already available in good editions. I like the designs, though.

Well, regardless of the veracity of this art, you're going to be disappointed on Cook/Thief since that one's been confirmed for a while.

I know, and I am still disappointed, unless they come up with some of his short films from the period as extras. There's some good stuff out there, like "Death in the Seine" or "26 Bathrooms", though I still dream of "A TV Dante" (which would make this a 2-disc set).

Wow, I certainly couldn't make out the small type! You're correct that Criterion "usually" might release a trailer of the film it accompanies in a release....but they have in fact released other trailers for other films as a special feature on a release. So it's not a hard and fast rule.

The Anchor Bay release of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover has been OOP for quite some time, goes for a very hefty price on amazon, and had few extras. It sounds like the perfect choice for Criterion.

It's not uncommon for graphic design students to have to mock up an entire DVD or CD package like this.

Haven't seen this one, but I couldn't agree with you more about Ang Lee. He gives Taiwanese filmmakers a bad name.

I seem to be getting more and more furious at the state of Criterion's production schedule. I assume they've completely abandoned their plans to release Senso.

Wow did you all find my website on the same day, your my third email in regards to this. These were a student project and will not be available from Criterion, unfortunately.

Other than Last Temptation, yes? And a set of his short films is supposed to come out relatively soon I believe.

I love The Ice Storm and I'll defend Hulk but I don't think I've been too fond of any of his other movies (I recently rewatched Crouching Tiger and had a "meh" reaction to it.) I recall this movie being rather awful, though, and the one I would have to say I actually hated, or at least strongly disliked. I can't imagine a director's cut improving things.

Am I the only one round here who likes this? It's probably my favourite Ang Lee film.

^ I think it's a genuinely interesting, even unique, film from a historical standpoint. As cinema per se, I don't think it's all that special, although I'd want to see it again to be really sure.

I'm well aware of that fact, and didn't mean to sound as if I was granting them license to release a certain title. Instead, my point was merely that this release won't be a complete waste of effort on Criterion's part--as had been previously asserted--as its an excellent film that currently has no region 1 release.

I can't speak for any of Lee's pre-Ice Storm work or Ride with the Devil, but I'm of the opinion that most of his work is divided between the very good (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain) and the merely adequate (The Ice Storm, Hulk, and Lust, Caution). I should add, though, that I dread the upcoming Taking Woodstock, as the trailer makes it look just awful. But regardless of how I feel about his finished products, I will always respect him as a filmmaker, since his films follow such widely divergent styles. Unlike some directors who get stuck working in the same genre for all of their careers, he's already tried his hand at drama, comedy, action, western, and comic book films.

I'll probably pick up Ride With the Devil. I like Ang Lee, and though this is probably his weakest film (at least until that awful-looking Woodstock film is released), I'm curious to see what he does with it. Even as the resident Criterion apologist though, I'm getting a little freaked out by the monthly mainstream studio-licensed Hollywood product. This economy must really be killing them.

Eat Drink Man Woman is one of my very favorite films, and I've liked most of his other films that I've seen, with the exception of Crouching Tiger. I haven't seen Ride with the Devil, but I'd be willing to give it a chance.

If I'm not mistaken it would be the first "American" civil war film in the collection.
