Nice - Weekend needs a proper re-master, the DVD's look quite pale in comparison to the other Godards.

I think we're getting an Essential Art House VI next month. Criterion has six new titles on the website (not coincedently the same as a boxset):

Fists in Pocket
Il Posto
L'Avventura
Spirit of the Beehive
Virgin Spring
Three Documentries by Saul Turell

I see the rest, but Three Documentaries doesn't seem to be there right now- it's only showing up in the context of the big Janus box.

This is surprising, I thought that line had been pretty firmly discontinued now that they've released a couple of mainline titles with the EAH price point.

Three docs is definitely on there for the last page.

This has to be a fairly recent acquisition, but Market Lazarova is playing at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles and rights are said to be owned by Janus Films. I actually saw this last year at The Cinefamily in Los Angeles with a pristine print and nothing was ever mentioned of Janus owning the rights.

It's been mentioned in passing here before. Unless the eventual DVD comes with the SR doc though I think their boxset is still going to be the way to go.

Except that the film recently underwent a massive restoration and the SR DVD, as indispensable as it has been for years, has room for improvement PQ-wise.

MARKETA LAZAROVA
1967, Janus Films, 163 min, Czechoslovakia, Dir: Frantisek Vlacil

Voted the best Czech movie of all time in a poll of 100 Czech film critics, this ravishing 13th-century epic based on a novel by Vladislav Vancura evokes an era when pagan and Christian clans faced off in a fierce struggle for dominance. An unforgiving winter landscape, dominated by hawks and wolves, sets the scene for a violent tale of rapacious rivalries played out in kidnapping, murder, plunder and rape. Vlacil’s unsettling symbolism carries a stark, eerie beauty, enhanced by Zdenek Liska’s avant-garde score. With Josef Kemr, Magda Vasaryova. In Czech with English subtitles. "A ceaseless flow of ravishing images." - Kristin M. Jones, The Wall Street Journal

Just to say that the Qatsi trilogy will be showing at the Edimburgh festival, in presence of Philip Glass.
I will be attending the Koyaanisqatsi showing, and will take care of whether any label logo appears somewhere.

The Criterion Twitter thread is buzzing with speculations re: Kieslowski, the Colours trilogy and a possible CC Decalogue. Well, if Criterion reads this, there are many good possible extras to be found in the 200 minutes of extras in the Polish DVD box, and in the extras in the French DVD box from Editions Montparnasse.

For more info on the French extras, go here.

Criterion wrote:We will soon be announcing revised Blu-ray and DVD editions of Jean Renoir's masterpiece The Rules of the Game as part of our November lineup—we are replacing one supplement and creating new packaging.

Our original DVD edition will then be officially out of print. However, at this time we are offering it at a 65% discount from the suggested retail price at Criterion.com. (Use the promotion code REGLE at checkout.) We have a limited supply. We will fulfill orders as soon as we can.

Nice. Three Colors and Rules of the Game. Even if there's nothing else I'm loving November's lineup. \:D/

I wonder if Krzysztof Piesiewicz would be available to contribute anything. Has he contributed to any previous DVD releases of Kieslowski in other regions? I know he's in the Polish parliament, but it would be great to get an interview with him. MichaelB, do you know anything?

Does anybody know which supplement is being replaced?

Why would they replace a supplement? Lost the rights to it?

Anyway, it's looking like this so far:

Three Colors
City Lights
Wild Strawberries
Y Tu Mama Tambien
The Rules of the Game

And Bitter Rice.

I was actually going to randomly guess that Rules and Wild Strawberries would be November upgrades. Perhaps Fanny & Alexander and Autumn Sonata in December?

Maybe a new commentary? The old one isn't bad, but it's strange (and in a sense not really a commentary.) In any case, it sounds like it's worth hanging on to the old one, for a while at least (I wonder if the repackaged version is going to be a rare collector's item.)

Wow, if both these are going to be true (Decalogue included) it`ll be the best month since... well... last november, I guess. Would be an awesome list.

I'm optimistic that CC will release Decalogue at some point but I think it's a bit much to expect it already in November.

I don't think The Decalogue is a huge reach for November. I'd think that Criterion would try to synchronize the Kieslowski's... if they do indeed have the rights to both. I think they do, so I have a feeling that Criterion will announce both Kieslowski sets on Monday. (They know they have to top this past November!)

Or maybe release Decalogue separately in December and make that the only release of that month (apart from blu-ray upgrades)?

Surely they would tease the shit out of the Decalogue? Can't imagine them just dropping it and letting it overshadow/be overshadowed by the colors trilogy

I think it's strategic of them not to build up hype for The Decalogue. It would only make it all the more "impactful" when it's (hopefully) announced next week. It works, because one would think they'd tease the shit out of it! (Skepticism will always prevail!!)

Well, this works well, too. :)
