Are there degrees to which you can "not buy" something?

Full price, during clearance sales, second-handed, not at all. That's the degrees. They come with the prices scale.

Let's say that I don't find anything great about this edition. I know that this will be a great release in the USA, with english subs and everything, but it's not like Criterion did a special job on this one and Gomorrah. They basically took something already done, put the subs, the wacky C and voila !

I have a lot of Criterions at home, and I can say, there are unique pieces of collection. What they did on French movies like the Godard (I'm still amazed by the Breathless presentation), the Truffaut, or the Malle, it's something we don't even have in France. Le corbeau ! We don't even have it ! At all !

I mean, it's French movies, and we don't have it in France, but thanks to Criterion, they exist on great edition somewhere. And what a job they did. But here, no, nothing.

I don't hate it. It's too bland, non-descript, and inoffensive to hate. I do think they could have done much better, though.
domino harvey wrote:I'm not Matt, but I think the fact that he took twenty minutes to make, pun intended, mock covers of other IFC titles using the same ridiculous template answers your question
I truly did not make those. I posted them on behalf of someone else.

I will not buy it in a house.
I will not buy it here or there.
I will not buy it anywhere.
Enough with this schtick already. You've made your point.

Ugh. What a bad still for the Pierrot disc. Belmondo looks like the worst kind of Gallic sleazeball. Why change the fantastic one that they had for the SD?

Because the SD version used the two discs to complement each other with the man and woman. This is limited to one and wouldn't work quite as well.

I emailed Criterion yesterday about the packaging for the early Blu's. He didn't answer my direct question about an exchange program, but knowing Criterion, they'll take care of us on this one..anyway:

Hi,

Thank you for your email!

The rumor is indeed true-- we will be offering sturdier replacement
packaging for the original digipack Blu-ray cases! The program is
currently in the works but we hope to have the upgraded plastic cases
available in late September. We will announce this on our web site as
soon as it is finalized!

I hope this information is helpful and thank you for supporting Criterion!

Sincerely,

Jon Mulvaney

5-sided slip covers are so much better than 4-sided ones. First non-Amaray Blu case they've gotten right. =D>

Re: Monterey. I haven't got it at hand, but doesn't the DVD box set come with a much more substantial book?

I haven't done a full "side-by-side" yet but the booklet in the Blu-ray Monterey Pop case is rather thick (45-pages or so, though the DVD set's is 63-pages) but is missing the reprinted Rolling Stone article by Jann S. Wenner and the intro by Pennebaker. The Jimi/Otis Blu-ray case comes with a very slim booklet that contains an essay by David Fricke, which isn't in the booklet that comes with the DVD set (though came with the individual DVD.)

Swo17, looking at the packaging for the Blu-Ray the Complete Montery Pop means that the box contains two of their regular Blu-Ray translucent plastic cases. The Man Who Fell To Earth came without the book, in one of those funky-assed sleeves that do not equal a box and an el cheapo cardboard case.

Does that mean that brand new forthcoming BR editions are always going to be humble and poorer cousins to the great SD-DVD sets or can we hope that future brand new BR multi-disced sets will be as handsome in their own way as the SD-DVD sets. I would think the CC crew would want BR box sets to stand out and win tons of awards.

I know this is a rhetorical question, but I really wish we BR buyers would get an equally deluxe set!

The same could be said regarding SD-DVD compared to the fabulous old laserdisc sleeves and their great designs. Seems that the increase in definiton is inversely proportionate to the quailty of the product presentation. It's called progress, I suppose.

I was just referring to the outer sleeve, which I think looks a whole lot better when it covers everything but the DVD spine(s), as opposed to leaving the top and bottom exposed (cf. the DVD vs. Blu releases of Last Year at Marienbad).

Swo17, I don't think I was quite clear in my post to you. Don't get me wrong. I agree that the package for Monterey is at least "box-like" instead of the wrap around cover that allows the contents to slip out and onto the floor every time it is touched (or conversely, so tight you can never get the damn thing out without practically destroying the whole package). My whole point, in a nutshell, was wondering if you or anyone, hoped that the Blu-Ray CC packaging would ever approach the elegance of the SC-DVD special releases - with their separate and thick booklets, and other packaging flourishes.

An appropriate response, especially since I accidentally dropped the "this is a rhetorical question" from the first to the second post!

I pray that the Gimme Shelter cover is just a quickie mock-up based on the DVD cover, but I fear it isn't since they've known they were going to release this in December for a long time (40th anniversary of Altamont and what not). Squishing it over to one side and slapping on the wacky c and sidebar just doesn't cut it.
