My wife's going to be kinda pissed if The Gold Rush is the next Chaplin, since I convinced her to sell her old WB/MK2 DVD on the grounds that the Criterion was imminent. Even though she got a good price for it, I think she misses it and suspects that I led her astray for a quick profit. And at the rate Criterion's going, the next Chaplin after The Gold Rush won't be released until May, 2014.

Interesting note: Rear Window is conspicuously absent from the 2012 Universal Blu-ray slate, despite the fact that The Birds and Vertigo are coming. Judging from the Legacy editions that came out a couple years back, Rear Window is in the top three Hitchcocks in Universal's canon - so why would it be ignored when The Birds is being boxed with Psycho and Vertigo?

Actually, that still of Chaplin in the chicken costume has pretty much convinced me. I haven't watched The Gold Rush in a looong time, so I don't even remember his foot bandaged, but that sounds right. I really hope they get around to City Lights sooner rather than later.

Well given that Gold Rush is on Janus' list for playing theaters (dec - march), it's safe to say that it'll be the next Chaplin. the question is only when.

Assuming you're referring to this, it sounds like there was some guesswork involved. I believe Vertigo and Rear Window have always gotten simultaneous releases, going back to when they were rereleased in theaters in the early eighties, and just a 3-disc box doesn't seem as likely, so I'd be quite surprised if Rear Window isn't part of this release. I wish you were right, because based on what those Legacy editions went for the first few years, the Universal Blus aren't going to be much cheaper than a Criterion during a half-off sale.

I was really hoping City Lights would be the next one.

Extremely, judging by the other Criterions and the fact that Janus is screening the silent Gold Rush currently (right?). Although then I'm a bit confused; the European Blus don't include the silent cut in HD right? So are Criterion creating their own master...? (I hope so, as personally I think almost all the Chaplin MK2 Blus so far are very average).

I wonder if the delay in Chaplin releases is partly due to MK2 not having restored anymore in a year so Criterion is preferring to spread the releases out themselves so that they don't reach a stage where they have to wait 2 years to release the other major titles... I mean there hasn't been a new Blu since The Circus in 2010 right? Leaving Limelight, Verdoux, Woman of Paris and others still to be done...
