I hope Beamish is the most right even if I know he is the most wrong.

Ha! Well, they like Charles Burnett, so I figured, why not go for a CRAZY left-field choice like that-a movie that has only
screened several times in North America and is probably going to be sitting in a vault indefinitely. It's a really good movie, BTW-
at $8 mill, it's his most expensive film, and there are certain shots that look like
Killer of Sheep redone in Technicolor.
Little Dorrit is my endless frustration with the WB Archive. They want to release more films made by women-why not that classic, finally?

I'd be seriously disappointed if it didn't have, at a minimum, the complete rough cut that Gary Graver schlepped around Hollywood after Welles
died, extended scenes, and at least two commentaries.
I do wonder if Criterion is holding off on it until they can release
Journey Into Fear.

I was always curious as to when Criterion did
The Magnificent Ambersons they didn't include
Journey Into Fear. I could see Criterion including a reflection by Peter Bogdonavich, historical documents of the clips shown at Welles' AFI appearance, and maybe a documentary about the history of the film. I hope there is a lot more though.

Journey into Fear has two distinct cuts that both exist, as do Welles' storyboards for it. There is definitely a lot they can add to that one.

Even if it was more popular, no way newly woke Criterion releases Nickelodeon. Maybe Indicator, though I’m not sure if Sony has UK rights

Haha I know but I'm not feeling particularly lucky these days, so I figure throw in an even farther left-field Bogdanovich and hope for a compromise from the gods

Maybe I'm not woke enough myself to have caught whatever would bother them, but I don't remember anything appallingly un-PC about the film.. what are you referring to?

While period accurate, white characters slathering on black makeup to play African natives and Burt Reynolds in Klan regalia acting out the Clansman to an enthusiastic audience would probably not be greeted warmly right now when even Lillian Gish is canceled

They did
Swing Time not long ago, and that blackface number is way more prominent. But the film itself is also way more prominent, so I’m sure there’d be a risk/reward consideration involved in a parallel universe where they’re remotely considering this.

I don’t think anyone can watch it in the spirit intended and be offended, especially since it doesn’t try to apologize or romanticize the realities of production (well, these particular ones, at least!) and what was popular. I’m just saying, were Criterion to lose a bet and think about releasing it, they’d probably decide it’s not worth the potential headache. We can’t even get people to agree on Birth of a Nation itself right now, is there any hope for a film built around the idea of its brilliance?
