Playtime on Blu is news of the year for me.

Seriously, this is one of those reasons to just go ahead and buy a Blu-ray player already.

I had just assumed they never had Blu rights. I mean, Christ, are Criterion really that stupid that they didn't realize this was the most obvious, most-beneficial Blu release out of their entire catalog? I can just see the board meeting: "Aww, I don't know guys-- El Norte should really come first"

They could very well still not have Blu rights... 8-[

Also, Criterion's SD transfer of the film is from a 35mm source. Correct me, but isn't it likely that their blu-ray transfer will be from the same source? I'm not an expert on Blu, but it seems to me that 70mm would be preferred for a high-def format.

and the first non director eclipse! (well the Korda set wasn't all directed by him, but this is still the first theme set)

Nikkatsu Noir

I Am Waiting
Rusty Knife
Take Aim at the Police Van
Cruel Gun Story
A Colt is My Passport

along with a striking black/pink color scheme. :-p

Noir set looks killer. Also is the Playtime going to be the 155 min cut, or is that not possible?

My understanding is that 35mm is essentially equivalent to 5000 lines of resolution. They save HD transfers of 4000 lines. Blu ray is 1080 (or sometimes I hear people say 2000), so I'm not sure if a 70 mm print would have been able to add anything. But I might be wrong.

Just noticed A Colt is My Passport. I might actually pre-order something for once.

Ruh roh. While this set is awesome, I sure as hell hope they don't end up producing that French New Wave box.

What did my comment have to do with the French New Wave set?

Why's that? I feel like I'm out of the loop or something.

Both non-director Eclipse sets

I assume he'd prefer extras in single-title releases

=D> I saw A Colt Is My Passport last year at the Fantasia Film Festival and was blown away. This is a must-buy for me.

Gangster VIP was also touring so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is just the tip of the iceberg of Nikkatsu films.

The Nikkatsu set is one I've been waiting on. Easily the release of the year for me.

Hey, you're the one who said they didn't pick up VIP.

But it looks like a great sampling of titles. Though, I thought they'd tie this to a main line release like they did with Rossellini, maybe they'll add something more next week.

Playtime on Blu! Finally! I resisted buying the reissue for nearly three years because it was just so obviously a prime candidate for Hi-Def. And as someone who loves Metropolitan, I gladly welcome The Last Days of Disco.

I wonder if there'll be another title trickling down next week, ala the late announcement of 2 or 3 things last month.

It seems a bit odd that neither Dielmann or Disco are getting blu releases, you'd think both would be likely. But I'm not complaining with two catalog blu releases, hopefully that (along with the amazon poll) is indicative of more of their catalog titles getting upgraded.

I think so. The last two months have had 4-5 releases/re-releases in the Collection, so I imagine we'll see 1-2 more things, hopefully a re-release (Fuller's Shock Corridor!). The Eclipse set is a big deal, though....do you think they'll count that in the place of another numbered release?

I assume that Howard's End will also be released on SD with a spine number.
Ian wrote:I'm confused? Is the listing for Howard's End in the Amazon blu-ray contest for a Criterion edition of Howard's End, or are we suppose to be voting for a bluray version of the Merchant Ivory disk?

SD disc is already out in Criterion's Merchant Ivory line
