I don’t think anyone can watch it in the spirit intended and be offended, especially since it doesn’t try to apologize or romanticize the realities of production (well, these particular ones, at least!) and what was popular. I’m just saying, were Criterion to lose a bet and think about releasing it, they’d probably decide it’s not worth the potential headache. We can’t even get people to agree on
Birth of a Nation itself right now, is there any hope for a film built around the idea of its brilliance?
I didn't even remember those parts, which goes to show how Bogdanovich's warm charms nullify any potential offense for me. I hear your point, though I don't think arguments around the merits of
Birth of a Nation are in a similar vein. I know where you're coming from but that film is always going to elicit cries of importance vs offense when its entire presentation is rooted in context contrasting with a sharp culture shift to offensiveness that one needs to be willing to meet objectively to access its offerings.
Nickelodeon is a series of scenes depicting Old Hollywood, and if one or two of those- I-don't-know, 100? -include some dated clashes of context, that may be easier to overlook, or compromise with, than an entire film chalk full of them.
Anyways, maybe a U.K. label will do it.

I wonder what chance this eventually has of happening. This is still a Lionsgate property I'm assuming?

Neon wanted to do a theatrical run from what I understand so I'm guessing Criterion will hold off on releasing it till Neon can do that.

Weird that the Agnes Varda set was announced early - any thoughts on whether we'll still get a slate of films Friday or Monday?
I'm hoping for
* I Know Where I'm Going (or A Canterbury Tale) upgrade
* Written on the Wind upgrade
* W.C. Fields box set
* Something by Jia Zhangke (Still Life perhaps?)

Still Life is with Big World Pictures, the outfit that put out the
Rebels of the Neon God resto a few years back. Janus/Criterion has the features from
Xiao Wu through
The World.

If they release this with the proper title and not as
Show Me Love, and give us a more X-rated
Comfort of Strangers cover than the BFI, we'll know Criterion has beat the constraints of the climate. (neither of those will ever happen though)

I'd be happy with all your suggestions too - I saw
Toni at the National Gallery of Art in DC on what I think is the best screen in town (take that AFI!!!) and it's a superb Renoir.
As for Fields - I like all the ones you mention and am also really fond of
The Man on the Flying Trapeze, Million Dollar Legs and the Mack Sennett four. Personally - the one Fields films everyone seems to like that leaves me cold is
My Little Chickadee - I find it middling Fields and middling-to-poor West.

Just looked at the page for this and there are 13 screenshots on it (compared to the 6 different screenshots that were there last year).

I'm surprised that you didn't notice it considering you were able to spot the update for 'The Lady Eve' and 'Taste of Cherry' a day before it was announced.
