Bill Hader, yes. Also Adrian Utley of Portishead (though he curated their ATP films). I supposed that they might have someone like Hader there to make Amarcord look cool to college kids. Adrian Utley was probably recording an interview on The Passion of Joan of Arc which he has written a new score for (that was performed at Lincoln Center at the time).

They do let all sorts of people in to raid their closet, and they're not necessarily contributors to specific releases, but they probably do have a reason to be in the Criterion offices. (I know somebody who was let loose in there.)

This is great low-cost marketing for Criterion. With celebrities that people pay attention to, it could be like Adidas giving their shoes and clothes to Run-D.M.C. to get some hip-hop marketing.

They have definitely paid contributors in product, but these "closet" videos aren't necessarily tied to that. A contributor I know who got paid in DVDs got more than half of the entire collection available at that time for 2 or 3 booklet essays.

Yes, I know a pair of Italian contributors who have been paid in DVDs... and they were very happy with Criterion's prodigality!
(Italian labels, I must admit, often pays in DVDs too)

Wow, the 2-disc edition was loaded with stuff as it was but I'd love to see that material pop up soon. I'd imagine this wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility considering how highly David regards the film, as opposed to the pulling of David's teeth Criterion seems to have been doing getting him on board to participate on a new edition of The Game. That's of course my opinion of why the release has been delayed, could be wrong on that.

The original theatrical DVD had no special features. The director's cut was released on DVD and HD-DVD (and Blu-ray eventually) with a second disc full of material. David Prior said (on hometheaterforum I believe) that he had another disc of material but Paramount didn't want to include it. If Criterion included this material that, along with the fact the BD is out of print, would be the only real advantage with them releasing it. I'd like to see it happen, though.

I wouldn't complain other if CC got Zodiac, especially given that the original US DC seems to be OOP.

I'm really kicking myself on not getting the Blu-ray. I already had the HD DVD, which was perfectly fine to me. I borrowed the Blu-ray from someone just to see if it was any better and other than the lossless audio I didn't see any significant difference between the two so didn't bother picking it up. Now the friggin' disc is skipping during one scene. Keep eying the UK one but am holding out in hopes the North American one will come out again.

It's almost certainly for The Game. But man what if they were working on Gerry? How amazing would that look on Blu-ray?!

Between the inexplicable OOP status of the original release and this whole additional disc thing (which I hadn't heard before), I wouldn't be shocked to see Zodiac announced, although if people complain when films are already out on a below average DVD and Criterion picks them up, I can't wait to see the outrage if they release a film that already has a 2-disc director's cut release out on Blu-ray!

You are probably wise to do so, considering that all of the material that completely fills out two discs are crammed onto one in the UK edition.

Do I remember correctly that one of the reasons that Paramount licensed out Benjamin Button was that the studio was disappointed with the Zodiac sales and thought that a Fincher title would sell better under the Criterion banner? Given the long history between Fincher and Criterion, it wouldn't seem out of the realm of possibilities for a new Zodiac disc, especially since it would probably require very little effort for CC.

They didn't actually licence the film to Criterion, but instead they licenced the branding from Criterion. But yes, I believe the general gist was that they thought the branding could help sales, even if it was by a little bit. Now I see it for something like $10 at Target.

It would be really funny if he was there doing something for "Margot at the wedding"...

Given Baumbach left Jennifer Jason Leigh for Greta Gerwig, I doubt either would be participating in a special edition for Margot, something which would no doubt cause the film to be a non-starter for Criterion. Not that I wouldn't love to be proved wrong, but...

I knew nothing of their personal lives, I just thought it was a good film.

Also, I love how this has now turned from "The Game" is finally coming, to maybe "Zodiac"?

I made the same mistake, but now my X-Box HD-DVD drive is long dead. I absolutely love this film (it's my pick for the best of 2007) and would love to see a Criterion come out rather than pay OOP marketplace prices.

You think Baumbach would just essentially abandon one of his films because of his personal life?

He's done it before and considering how closely he made the film with Leigh it wouldn't be irregular of him to have dropped it.
