Odd how The Game carries the Focus brand these days. During its original release, it was distributed by Polygram, and I doubt it occurred to anyone that it was an arthouse flick.

I'm pretty sure all the titles Universal picked up in the USA Films acquisition were put under the Focus umbrella. The old Universal DVD didn't mention Focus simply because it hadn't been formed yet.

Blast from the past: Zazie dans le métro has been included in this year's Communication Arts magazine Design Annual (see "Packaging" category here, or on the magazine stand this month).

For the most part, 2-disc sets have been digipack, no? Samurai Trilogy is the only exception I can think of off the top of my head. (Monterey Pop and Yojimbo/Sanjuro don't count since their titles are also available individually).

Samurai Trilogy was the first time they figured out how to do a figure-8 Blu-ray set. Children of Paradise uses this type of packaging as well. I'd expect to see a lot more of this going forward.

Yes, I would expect to see Brazil in the Samurai/Children of Paradise-style case. It'll be nice to reclaim the shelf space from the huge DVD box.

Interesting. I guess the only reason they have to do digipaks for 1 or 2-disc releases going forward then is when they have larger booklets.

Or maybe they'll make the booklet thin enough to fit in a plastic case, like they did with Double life of Veronique. That way they can save even more money.

I didn't realize Children of Paradise was a two disc bluray, I would have thought they'd make it a $50 price point like the other two disc blus.

Adjusting the title to "In the Mood for Love" to all upper-case letters (from lower-case on the DVD), makes the entire cover design much more elegant.

I don't like it. It's like the title for a romantic comedy and the Os in Mood should be wedding rings.

Crumpled bedsheets seem to be becoming a mini-theme of Criterion's year in packaging!

Hi all,

I'd like to know exactly when Criterion went to their new format, with "The Criterion Collection" printed at the top of the cover to the "C" logo on the spine.

I know this is probably incredibly easy to determine, I just haven't found a way how!

Wow really! I just placed an order for the Rohmer collection through Amazon. So you're saying every spine after this will be with the new logo, right?

For those of us who are collectors, I was wondering if there was a preference either way of acquiring the older format or newer "C" format. Of course the oldest format (like with Sid & Nancy) is with "The Criterion Collection" (serif font) across the top of the cover. These are primarily with the OOP spines.

I was around when it all went down which is why I remember that it was actually A Canterbury Tale, which first showed up with no logo whatsoever before they finalized the now familiar update

Wha? A Canterbury Tale was released with the old logo and was one of the very last releases with it. The new logo first appeared on the August 2006 releases, which included Seduced and Abandoned, Six Moral Tales, and Kicking and Screaming.

It appeared sans logo at a time when they were talking about redesign, I misremembered that it showed up with the old logo but the timeframe is right

We certainly did have a time making fun of that cover, though. Some of the image links are broken, but you get the general idea.
