I also remember Dr. Popaul being pretty terrific. Worth rescuing if at all available.

It seems Kino's Dead of Night is indeed from a newer transfer, beating Studio Canal's 2014 release in almost all aspects.

The Two 1960s SciFi Cult Classics turned out to be at opposite ends of the quality spectrum for British SF films - the restrained The Day The Earth Caught Fire (a BFI edition of which exists for those of us in the Region B world) and the decidedly odd They Came From Beyond Space. The latter was filmed back to back with that other oddball Amicus SF, The Terrornauts, and apparently all the budget had been used by that film. The result is in no way a good film, but has its pleasures and moments of interest - the opening parts are quite restrained and would appear to be an influence on the first Pertwee Doctor Who serial, like other Amicus films it's rooted in actuality with Kenneth Kendall turning up as a newsreader (which he was at the time), and the final section of the film when Michael Gough turns up is simultaneously both camp excess and oddly downbeat. It also makes a fascinating comparison to the original novel (The Gods Hate Kansas by Joseph Millard) - the transformation of two works from the height of the US SF Pulp era to mid-1960s British SF cinema makes them more interesting than might be the case.

Has anyone seen the "Alphaville" Blu-ray that came out on Jul-09? No screencaps have been found yet. This is a 4k restoration so it should look better than the 20-year-old Criterion DVD. I've seen it streamed at Youtube and Amazon Prime and they use the old SD Criterion print. Kino's recent 4K versions of ex-Criterion French titles like "Bob le Flambeur" and "Le doulos" both look fabulous, so I'm hopeful about "Alphaville." Kino's recent "Dead of Night" Blu-ray is wonderful as well, and to discerning eyes it is an improvement to the old Blu-ray.

Is The Decline of the American Empire headed for a long-overdue update? Would love to see that happen, especially with Denys Arcand's newest film out.

Also, given that Kundun is coming, could Blood In, Blood Out be a possibility, too?

I think of any Godard blu ray, this ranks as my tied Favorite with the Pierrot Le Fou Criterion blu. Blacks are sharp, soundtrack is not in the incorrect key which most Lionsgate films have, grain is very strong, commentary is very insightful, and clarity is above and beyond (To the point where certain aspects ofAlphaville that I loved like its intention to hide Parisian landmarks are sometimes noticeable and random pedestrians reactions/walking like normal towards the end). I would say the night time scenes are sometimes limited due to equipment Coutard had the time. The stand out scene that sold me on Kino’s restorations was the Poetry scene with Lemmy and Natacha in the hotel room. This might be the best any of the Godard/Nouvelle Vague film restorations have looked.

I am a Criterion addict, been so for 7 years. But with Kino snatching the OOP titles, I have 0 problem. The restoration work on Alphaville, Bob Le Flambeur, Leon Morin, Priest, and especially Le Doulos, I have no qualms if they had the entire StudioCanal library. BRING ON THE GABIN!!!

True, most of the 2K/4K masters we received from StudioCanal were done earlier and some have been released in other territories. But the Link transfer and most of the titles coming out In October are brand new transfers, most of these were not available in HD prior to our deal, these are all new 4K restorations by Kino Lorber and StudioCanal.

Also, our 4K master for Dead of Night is much better than the previously released Blu-ray and the master for Kind Hearts and Coronets is a new one.

I'm not familiar with releases from other territories, so I don't know if their Godard and Melville used for the UK sets were the same of different.

We've restored/remastered hundreds of titles in the past few years and over 1,000 if you go back to our 40+ year history.

For some of the films, they're handling the elements in Europe and we're handling the ones in the U.S. - Winter Kills, Day of the Dolphin, just to name a couple. But 100% of the new masters with the other studios are Kino Lorber restorations.
