FWIW:

Thank you for your email!

There are no Tarkovsky Blu-rays on the slate at the moment, but we do hope to get some more titles in our catalog in the future!

Lions Love by Agnes Varda is now on MUBI (formerly The Auteurs) and it's presented by Criterion. Can we maybe expect a future release? I remember hearing a while back and posting about how Agnes Varda was talking with Criterion to put out some more of her films, but that apparently at the time, they weren't interested. Good to hear they may be finally biting.

Last month there were what, 2 titles that got Blu announcements a day or two later? (Everlasting Moments, Close Up)

Nice, it wasn't there a while ago. It seems that my decision not to but the mammoth set finally pays off.

I suspect we'll start seeing some of them in September . . . I don't know that any of those were anticipate for August releases.

Does anyone know when this is being released? It sound like they are actually going to get these out quite soon?

Great to see it's finally coming!

I have to wonder how Criterion will handle the remaining Ozu films. That two of his earlier films recently got spine numbers; and in a box, proves that they're not above being completely unpredictable. The way I see it, the remaining silent films will likely be Eclipsed...one set for the earliest surviving films (from 1929 to 1931, including fragments, seems appropriate), and another for the rest. But what about the remaining sound films? And then there's the question of Blu-ray releases...obviously Tokyo Story is the most likely first candidate, and Good Morning stands to benefit the most of all. Floating Weeds would also be ideal; and nicer if both films were in 1080p.

I often catch myself randomly speculating how Criterion will distribute the films of Japanese directors if they got their hands on them...a rather easy thing to get hooked on, considering how many unreleased films there are to work with, and so many major film makers to explore. Will Floating Clouds and Late Chrysanthemums get separate releases, or boxed up with the other Hayashi adaptations? Would such a box be spine'd or Eclipse'd? Oshima's filmography in the 60s seems vast; how many Eclipse sets will they devote to him? Will Sadao Yamanaka get spine numbers, a box, or Eclipse? Will they risk their own Blu-ray of Profound Desire of the Gods? How long will they let Animeigo be the only company to release Tomu Uchida films? And how about that Mizoguchi?

Good Morning is definitely one of those titles that I am dying to pick up, but can't help but feel like the minute I do, they'll announce a blu ray re-release. it's getting a bit frustrating in that sense with older stuff....really anything <#350 or so is a crapshoot at this point.

Don't bother buying the Criterion Good Morning DVD (unless you can get it used for a dollar or so). One of the worst-made Criterion releases ever (inferior even to the preceding HomeVision video). Any of the non-R1 alternatives are better.

And I would bet that this gets the full Blu/DVD-treatment from the BFI in the foreseeable future. For the moment, I would wait for that, unless you can get the Tartan 3-discer really cheap.

Does anyone think An Autumn Afternoon would be high in the running of Criterion priorities for Blu-Ray release?

reports such as this are why I don't own it in the first place...i've come close to getting it for $8-$10 a couple of times, but have held off because of it's notorious reputation as a shoddy dvd.

Was it a source issue? is it something that is fixable and therefore a potential re-release on blu? Given that there are literally hundreds of films in the collection that would all benefit from going blu, I imagine it's not an easy process to have to pick and choose, and they certainly aren't going to please everyone with what they do pick. At least Black Orpheus was a bit of a left-field choice....hopefully there are more in the coming months.
