I know this is not the right place for such a thought, but Madman's disks are so good, that we should have a dedicated thread for them, in Boutique Labels perhaps...

Aren't you being just a wee bit overly impatient?

I could loan you a couple bucks if you're that desperate for cash...

Speaking of Godard films left to release on Criterion, what about his films from the 80s, 90s, and even the 2000s?

Aren't those all property of New Yorker (which is affiliated with something else now, right?), Wellspring, Lionsgate or Facets? I know everyone hates on Facets, but their Keep Your Right Up disc is pretty decent from what I remember.

Aside from the white subs that render half of the dialog invisible during the airplane sequence... although I'm sure Godard loved it!

I'd really love to see MOC put out A Touch of Zen - all the existing DVDs for this great, important film have been well below par, including the dreadful Optimum disc currently doing the rounds in the UK.

It would be a fine release if we could get hold of it - we'd love to do it. We're coming out of an acquisitions period now, and moving into a 'batten down the hatches' mode, but it's certainly on our 'desirables' list.

In the meantime, you could snap up Raining in the Mountains and Lee Khan and The Valiant Ones, and also look into Eiichi Kudo's jidai geki films (11 Samurai, The Great Killing, 13 Assassins, The Fort of Death). Some more contemporary Japanese cinema on Blu-Ray would be fab as well.

You lot need to set up a new label! There's only 4 of us and we've got 30+ titles on the griddle.

I occasionally fantasise about kidnapping some of the more unrealistically purist posters here and forcing them to work in an actual DVD production environment for a few months, complete with tight budgets, deadlines and sales targets. Seldom will Coleridge's description of "A sadder and a wiser man/He rose the morrow morn" be more apt.
Or they'll just go gibberingly insane at the cognitive dissonance, but I think it's a risk worth taking.

I'm not in the industry but I appreciate how tough it must be to stay afloat in today's market... I've been watching Arrow's Bird With The Crystal Plumage getting its ass kicked over the last week or so... I hope the title does well for them in spite of the drama over the framing. They obviously put a lot of love and care into their product...

I never said "release this stuff now or else". After all, this is the Wishlist & Suggestions thread, and Touch of Zen is the only one King Hu title currently with a UK distributor. Kudo is not represented in the UK at all. All of the Kudo films and unlicensed Hu titles I suggested would not be out of place in the MoC canon, and it'd be fab to see them on the label, whether it be in 2012 or 2014. Just saying.

Just to be clear, my comment was a generalised quip in response to Peerpee's post - it was absolutely not aimed at a specific individual!
(And I'd be more than happy to see some decent King Hu releases)

I would be more than happy to work for the BFI as an intern, no need to kidnap me!

Thank you for saying this. I have often had thoughts along similar lines.

#20 is Kobayashi's Harakiri according to MoC's twitter background.

MoC just tweeted
this. Looks like The Ballad of Narayama will be MoC's next Imamura.

Funny thing is last night I just rewatched the Animeigo? The attack scene at the midway mark is one of the most frightening moments I've experienced.

Great news on Narayama! The AnimEigo DVD is decent, but there's certainly plenty of room for improvement.

I think the most exciting news is that MoC is licensing from Toei. I know Eureka did the Female Convict set from films licensed from Toei, but Even Criterion has never licensed from Toei. I hope they manage to license more (Fukasaku please)!
