Finally received my (steelbook) copy last night and immediately dug in. Overwhelming would be a good way to describe this - from the classy, elegant packaging to the jampacked book to the unbelievable clarity and stability of the transfer (I watched the 20fps (totally silent) version right away and was floored by the whole experience). This is one of the most amazing packages I've ever had the pleasure of holding in my hands. Surefire Release of the Year material.

Dreyer shot JOAN on the newly developed "panchromatic" film stock, which allowed him to capture greater detail than what had ever been achieved before. I am assuming the Blu-Ray is region B, a capability I don't have, although I have an all-region DVD player. Is the 20fps version also included on the DVD?

I don't have my set on hand, but I'm 99% certain that the content on the DVD is the same as on the Blu. The DVD set has two discs, I believe one for each framerate.

The DVDs have the 24fps version, 20fps version, and the Lo Duca version, Region 2 NTSC discs.

The packaging is extraordinary, as is the film. An incredible central lead performance by Maria Falconetti, one of the best I've ever seen. Definitely reissue of the year.

So what is the general opinion regarding Gaumont's restoration? I've read through this board and I'm guessing at this point we don't have definitive knowledge of which print they will use (i.e. with Dreyer-approved intertitles or not).

This package is too amazing to pass up, but curiosity mainly for the inevitable Criterion release (although Criterion is easily overshadowed by MOC with the amazing releases the past few years).

We can make a reasonably educated guess that the Gaumont restoration will have better funding (hopefully stretching to 4K and photochemical as opposed to MoC's 2K and all-digital), and I imagine the intertitles will be in French for all sorts of polemical reasons - after all, the Danish intertitles were expunged from the 1980s restoration from the Oslo print, so it's not as though they haven't done it before.

In fact, the existence of the MoC edition provides a good excuse not to bother with Danish intertitles at all (since they're easily available in Region B-friendly form), and Gaumont can also point out that, paradoxically, the MoC edition only provides a French viewing option on the Lo Duca cut, despite the film technically being French!

But this is obviously guesswork: until the restoration actually happens, no-one not directly involved will know.

I'd imagine the only way they could hope to top MoC's sterling efforts would be to gain access to the original Oslo print, for a 4K scan, and create new preservation elements and a definitive master of the original.

I would also hope that in the decades since their original restoration, it might prevail upon them to honor the intent of the original and preserve the Danish intertitles.

Or could have their cake and eat it to, by having dual sets of intertitles, and employ seamless branching?

Not sure how we missed this news for four days, but according to Eureka's facebook page, this is getting a reissue on 8/21/17.

Yes, with a new cover art too.

Yes: same exact discs as the steelbook (1xBD + 2xDVD), and a reduced booklet (so it can fit inside the Amaray case), but new artwork on the front and the initial release artwork on a slipcover (limited edition).

Sounds like a nice reissue for those that missed out the first time around, even if the booklet will probably be cut down somewhat compared to the original.
