It's not a total success but f*** the haters, Zabriskie Point has plenty of greatness in it. The DVD looks pretty good, but it definitely needs a BD release, especially given the brilliant color and the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. (FWIW, as Dave Kehr points out the DVD came out the same week as another Woodstock reissue, and to these non-nostalgic eyes, something about Antonioni's film feels brutally honest compared to the marketable mythology surrounding that documentary's subject.)

I am both ecstatic that this is getting a release, and disappointed that the first Busby Berkeley box set isn't getting an upgrade instead. The fact this is a brand new transfer and not the DVD master helps a lot though.

Well that took long enough. It's been out on region-free disc from Fox everywhere but America for years now

One thing that had recently been revealed as being a key part of WB's decision on putting a title in WAC vs. WHV is if they only have US rights. So, in that regard, it's not too surprising to see this one as a WAC release. Makes me wonder what other titles have been released overseas by other studios that WB has US rights to that could be next.

It was somewhere in one of the podcasts in answer as to why Yankee Doodle Dandy went to WAC.

I thought he was saying retail passed Yankee to WAC as they base their release decisions on global demand, rather than global rights, and felt it was a film with limited appeal outside of the US, so it goes to WAC with a higher price point. But the rights issue explains Ladyhawke and Maddening Crowd. Although not Performance.

Well, if you can only sell a title in the US the global demand would certainly be curtailed. Not saying it's the only factor, but being a factor makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, I meant I didn't take from what he said that they only held the US rights to Yankee. WHV like releasing catalogue titles at a fairly low price point, meaning they need sales to make up for tight margins. What I thought he meant was that when they didn't think they would shift in the desired volume, then they'd let WAC release it at the higher price with a better margin. Hence the region A WAC release for Yankee. But I could have taken it wrong. I have no idea what the international rights situation for the picture is.

Performance doesn't seem to make sense under either rationale as Warners have global rights for it, and I would have thought there'd be region B interest.

Warner should own worldwide rights to YDD, but being such an American centric movie limits its appeal overseas. So that one's not a rights issue. But if a rights issue causes a similar limited market, such as in the case of Ladyhawke, it makes equal sense. Hope that clarifies what I was trying to say.
