Or they could hire a freelance blogger to just stir things up. Like myself.

Why don't they just write a blog listing every title they plan on releasing in the next five years so we have nothing to discuss on this forum other than why the packaging for a certain release sucks or rocks?

Because no matter how much we know in advance, we'd always want to know more!

For those who enjoyed Eric Skillman's entry, read
his own blog for more Criterion talk about other covers he designed or supervised.

I really dig the rejected solo con tu pareja image.

Even though I hated that part of the film, I dig it, too. Much more than what they ended up using.

I'm floored that the cover for Yi Yi was restaged using a double! You just don't think about these things.
The amount of work that goes into a Criteiron package design is just amazing, and it almost makes me feel bad that we complain about them so much.

I think Skillman's covers, specifically the ones on his site both that he did and that he served as art director for, are consistently some of the absolute best Criterion has to offer. People don't usually complain here about his work, I don't think. It's the other, uglier ones that draw criticism. (The ones that don't look like they have the same amount of work put into them.)

Same here. I'd naively thought that would have been one of the easiest covers to make - just slap the title on there! It is fascinating to see the development to the final image and all of the attempts at feeling their way through different ideas. It helps to demystify the process for people without any sense of composition or artistic bone in their body, like me!

That's fascinating stuff. I especially enjoyed the discussion of his working methods with Jaime Hernandez. Skillman deserves a lot of credit simply for giving such interesting illustration work to fantastic comic artists like Xaime and Mike Allred, who are simply two of the best artists in the medium. As a big fan of their work, that was really cool to see.

There's
a new Eric Skillman blog. "a blast from the past".

Woah, those are pretty bad. Thank god they went with the design that wasn't completely terrible.

Eric Skillman wrote:Welcome, everyone! I say that because that last post seems to have exponentially increased the readership of this blog. Because sometimes the world is fair, and "Xaime Hernandez" is still a more googled search term than "people who think their jobs are interesting enough to blog about."
Apparently he doesn't realize yet that 75% of his new readership came from here.

I'm OK with CriterionForum.org being the perpetual underdog. It's part of the charm.

I did not mean to indicate that I wanted the forum to receive some sort of credit for increasing his readership. In fact, I'd prefer he didn't notice we were there. I wouldn't want him to censor himself in what he posts.

Tell me. Earlier today I noticed that they were working on the site and some of their links were disabled. Consequently, all of the old criterionco title links on the forum now redirect to their homepage.

Well that's just great.
Sometime later this week I'll go through each thread in the Criterion section and remove the "co" from the hyperlink url in the first post, fixing the problem.

why not just use the phpBB word replacement function to automatically change "criterionco" to "criterion"?

I don't know, I don't have access to phpBB. If that would work, by all means--but only Chris would be able to do it.

Yeah it's in the Admin Panel, the "Word Censor" section... it should do the trick

I think I have to manually go into the DB and change all the links. Hopefully I can do a simple SQL query. Does MySQL have a Replace function??
