I like the canted title card, not a big fan of the wasted space

I second that. I find the template to be quite simple and lovely. Dead space is alive and well, and living at Eclipse!

Very simple and stylish. Love it

yea i love the design, and the idea of keeping it basically the same from one box to the next. i can see a whole shelf full of eclipse titles in my future.

Yeah, why don't we fill it full of skywriting!

that's the first cover in months that feels like a real Criterion and not someone from the .com forum's fan art

Vengeance is Mine is ok. The MoC is, I think, much better.

I actually enjoy the Criterion version much more.

That
Vengeance is Mine cover is hot! I'm not crazy about the
Army of Shadows cover though. The gradient in the title text is so Macromedia Freehand 1995. I wish they could have done something similar to
the way the text in the title card appears.

Army of Shadows looks rotten. Really, really bad. He looks like he's been tortured with MS Paintbox. I do like Vengeance is Mine, even though it has a certain colouring of the Lord of War poster. Sansho is kinda blah, and I realise they have to produce a new cover for The Third Man, but losing the iconic shot of Welles in the doorway and replacing it with something that could just as well be The Signalman is a shame.
I'm not really fussed about any of the releases this month since they all (or will soon) have very high quality editions in the UK. The monthly rush has passed.

i think i prefer the MoC "Vengence" cover to the criterion, but the criterion cover is one that i wouldn't mind of other people saw that i owned it. that MoC one makes me nervous.

Other than Vengeance is Mine (from wich I like the MoC version better) I love all the other 3 covers! All brilliant!

There's something about the starkness of the cover for Army of Shadows that works for me. Not great like the one for Sansho, but effective. (The swastika on the floor may be a little over-the-top, though.)

What all that wasted blue space needs is a nice Hitler mugshot.

One thing that makes the new Third Man cover better than the original is that it keeps with the spirit of the film about the mystery enshrouding who the third man is. The original cover, which I adore, does ruin the movie's key scene for the uninitiated.

What, and the title card isn't
so 1985 stencil?
Am I the only one who likes the cover? I think it goes hand in hand with the stylized world of Melville's films.

It feels very
Dead Zone to me.

Buttery Jeb wrote:Looking forward to this disc. Shame the artwork is so weak; but I think the style might come out better on a digipak. God I hope it does, at least.
justeleblanc wrote:The artwork is great, BJ. Were you hoping for a gun?
Buttery Jeb wrote:I dunno... maybe it's the awkward blue-on-blue-on-blue color scheme. Or the use of the shackled prisoner that, while iconic for the film, seems to be the only image anyone ever uses for it (the BFI disc has roughly the same image as its cover; and virtually every review I read when the film was reissued used it as well). As I said, the texture given the art by being printed on a Digipak might help; but, looking at it on a computer screen leaves me cold.
Again, this is all personal preference on my part, and I'll be picking this up regardless of what it looks like. The artwork just doesn't work for me, and it's probably my least favorite cover from Criterion in a while.
jbeall wrote:I agree that the artwork seems underwhelming. I think they want it to look similar to Le Cercle Rouge. I don't think it's bad per se, but they've had some fantastic covers lately (Green for Danger, 49th Parallel) that I feel kinda let down by this one. Doesn't matter, I'll still buy it. I'm even more excited about this purchase now that I've seen the features.

I have pretended for years that the CC covers don't matter, but now I have to come out of the closet. The Fucking Army of Shadows and Bailiff covers are ugly.

I like all the new CC covers. I don't know what some people are complaining about. I like the minimalistic look... less is more.

Yap, Ok less is more and more is less. Call me a luddite but the quick-cheap-sterile-computer-freehand-so-'98-style doesn't look too good to me. Lazy stuff. Not minimalistic at all, I find. Just sparse, undefined and quite uninspired. It's semi-Ok, but the CC looks have been better in the past. But... the film is a masterpiece and this babble is just babble.
