Anyone use halogen work lights? Any recommendations?

I am very proud to report that a short film I directed, "Asshole," starring Gavin McInnes, was selected for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Congratulations! Can we read even more about it? Can we see it?

I was asking him over on the Sundance thread if he took it down off the LastPictures site (or maybe the LP youtube channel), because there was a time he & I were corresponding over some of these premeires (in an earlier venue prior to Sundance) and I could swear I watched Asshole on LP or the tube.

Todd I think you must be remembering a clip of it from the trailer for our multi-film showcase called "Bad Things," which you unfortunately didn't get the invite in time to attend. The film isn't allowed to be online in its entirety - but we're gonna have a teaser and website up by the end of the week.

I wrote some stuff about making the film and posted some stills a few pages back.

In the meantime, you can enjoy these two other pieces we did with Gavin.

That answers the vaguery of my recollection.. It was absolutely the trailer indeed.

My friend is working on a short film and he asked me to rewrite his script (which is atrocious), and I came up with this:

Harmony Is Missing

It's a first draft, mostly just a tightening of the original, as well as a cleaning-up.

So, I've been working on my first real film for the last 4 months, a featurette. First time an audience will get to see it is next Friday.

Thought I'd share the trailer with you all, as I've been mostly a lurker but the discussions here and the films that I've been pointed to have ultimately influenced my work.

Can you talk about the making of it? Do you have a page up on all that?

Here is a teaser trailer for my first full length film project, a documentary about a musician from Chatham, Ontario, Canada named Lonesome Lefty.


I made this trailer as I have had some interest expressed in the project from potential producers, so I'm not sure what the reaction will be.


Also, while I'm posting my first thread here, my demo reel for my short film projects, 3 of which are available from the Canadian Film Makers Distribution Company.

I don't own one, but I do have access to one. While the image is amazing and you can do a near lossless transfer to 35mm print, the camera itself is still rather clunky in numerous areas.... when fully assembled it weighs a ton which also restricts the shooting options. Supposedly the "Scarlett" Red Cam will fix all this though.

Very nice. This is probably a fairly obvious question, but have you gone to the NFB or CBC with this? It seems like it would be right up their alley.

You also may want to try these guys. They recently helped a friend of a friend of mine finish post on a one hour documentary, as well as shop it around, and it has since been picked up by a few networks in Canada and I think in Europe as well.

Thanks - a compliment from you is very meaningful, as I respect your opinion in your many posts here.

I have looked into NFB, but unfortunately I don't qualify for anything as this is a full length project and they only support emerging artists doing shorts, which I've already done (not that I wouldn't considering doing more, but I want the experience of putting together a 90min film). My "realistic" goal is to get this to TVOntario, but even then my complete lack of a track record with features is a deal killer... which is why I need a producer with a lengthy track record to back me up on this, as that would help some place like TVO to go for it in spite of my lack of feature experience. Considering I have had some tentative interest, I made this trailer for their preview purposes... it's easier to take a leap of faith on someone like me if I have something to address their concerns with.
It's the old Catch 22 - no one will hire you if you don't have experience and you don't have experience if no one will hire you.

The Film Transit thing looks interesting, though their website isn't all that specific about any project proposal submissions? What doc did your friend do? I suppose I'll just email them and hope for the best. I'll give you and this website credit if anything comes of that!

As for Films Transit, it appears they mostly take finished films to market, however, if they like what they see they may be able to put you in touch with producers they are friendly with to help you get the film across the finish line. It couldn't hurt - at the very least, they may point you in some different directions.

My friend's doc was Jump! The World's Greatest Streakers, focusing on mostly European football streakers etc - a pretty specific, left field doc - but it had universal appeal. Even though it was only an hour, it took three years to finish and producers only came on to help out and market it towards the end of production.

Your doc I think is a no brainer for any of the major Canadian broadcaster and is exactly the kind of Canadian story that can be really appealing to a broad audience. I wish you good luck and hope you're able to snag a producer to help you out.

Appreciate the vote of confidence. Upon closer inspection on Films Transit, they do have some specifics about submissions but I don't think my project applies at all to what they say they're looking for ("...large international subject matters" they state). I suppose it's a shot in the dark once it's done and if I still don't have anything cooking on it by then, but we shall see. I'm still waiting to hear back from the producer who stated he wanted to see something in the first place... he's back from Sundance and told me he will watch it. No reply as of yet. If he didn't like it he would be the first person to tell me so, so I suppose that shouldn't worry me too much.

Here's a music video of one of my songs, directed by and starring myself. I shot it during a college animation class a few years back. I kinda wish I'd had more time to work on it, but still enjoy it.

How was the trip to Sundance? Are we going to hear your stories? See your short film finally? (Or am I just out of the loop?)

It was great. I met some amazing people, saw some good films and overall had a wonderful time. The film was received very well - there's nothing quite like hearing 500 people laugh like hell through your entire film. The film was bought for distribution by Future Shorts, so it should be out on dvd, foreign tv and the internet at some point. It was also accepted at the Gen Art Film Festival in New York, so those of you that live in the city can see it on April 5th attached to the feature "Punching the Clown."

We are now working on a sequel which will of course include beautiful women, guns and explosions.
