Does the "old" Studio Canal DVD of Alphaville (Serie Noire) have subtitels or even a german dubbing, like the Pierrot le Fou DVD? Thanks.

DVDRAMA now has reviews and screencaps for each of those Studio Canal remastered Godards (no subs on any of these):
A bout de souffle
Le Petit soldat
Le Mépris
Pierrot le Fou
Made in USA
Une Femme est une femme
Alphaville
And their review of the Gaumont

Has anyone been able to find out which films Lionsgate will be releasing? When I called their office two months ago, I spoke with a nice woman who said they had yet to decide which films to include.

In case people missed it in the
Optimum thread, news is that
Helas pour moi will be released with English subtitles on July 9th.

The listing notes that the film will be presented in its original aspect ratio -- which is 1.33:1. If StudioCanal/Optimum end up using the same transfer on a future release of 'Nouvelle Vague' as existed on the Cahiers du cinéma "Deux films de... Godard" set (packaged with 'Hélas pour moi'), that film will be presented in its incorrect ratio: 1.66:1. (Just as 'For Ever Mozart' was, from New Yorker. Although unless I'm wrong, both that film and 'Nouvelle Vague' are Gaumont properties.) Like all Godard post-'Sauve qui peut (la vie),' the original aspect ratio is 1.33:1 -- across the board.
The only 1.66 variations are 'Weekend,' 'Tout va bien,' and 'Sauve qui peut (la vie).'
craig.

I think Godard filmed with the knowledge that the film would be matted theatrically to 1.66:1 tho. But hooray for the Helais Pour Moi news, that's one of only two Godard features I haven't seen.

I think he accepts it in certain screening conditions as a compromise, as in the incident concerning
Eloge de l'amour James Quant cites in his essay "Here and Elsewhere: Projecting Godard" in
For Ever Godard. For what it's worth, I think
Nouvelle vague is amazing even in its truncated 1.66:1 form, but I'm sure it'd be even greater seeing the full frame. Not much confidence that'll happen, though.
By the way, does anyone by chance have a copy of the article Godard published in
Cahiers du Cinema regarding the use of the academy frame? I've seen it referenced in several places where an internet copy appeared to be circulating (the file link long dead).

Translation: "Formats" by Jean-Luc Godard - Cahiers du cinéma - June 2004
(Jean-Luc Godard has requested that 'Notre musique' be projected in 1:1.37, a format very rarely available in theaters today. In moving from two stills from his film and a rough sketch comparing the rigorousness of the different formats, he provides evidence in these documents turned over to Cahiers of the effects of the modifications so often subjected to films.)
COLUMN 1: 'NOTRE MUSIQUE' STILL A
1/37: A PERSON
1/66: A CHARACTER
1/85: A SATELLITE SLAVE
COLUMN 2: SKETCHES
cathedral-window / myth
window / history
1.37 / human being
1.66 / credit card
1.85 / dollar
Scope / burial
COLUMN 3: 'NOTRE MUSIQUE' STILL B
1/37: PROOF OF SERB BOMBINGS
1/66: PROOF DIMINISHED BY EUROPE/USA
1/85: EXTERMINATION OF THE PROOF (MILOSEVIC ACQUITTED)
craig.

Wow! I hope if they're not English-friendly that at least the transfers will be licensed to a company that is. A Dziga Vertov Group box set would fill in a huge gap.

holy smokes, someone email them and tell them how much more money they'd make if they include English subs. to be able to replace fourth generation bootlegs with proper transfers, it's like a dream come true!

Christ, and look at what else is on its slate: Costa, Duras, Angelopoulos, Rouch. Unfortunately, a quick browse suggests a policy of Spanish-only subtitles. But the catalogue puts the likes of Artificial Eye to shame. In fact, in the pointless game of 'fantasy DVD labels', that's most of the stuff that I would have chosen to release.

I emailed them and received a reply stating unfortunatley they're not allowed to produce an English subtitled version of this peculiar part of JLG's filmography.

Histoire(s) du Cinéma are
finally available! At Gaumont. Zone 0 and with English subtitles, sirs.

At least we still get
British Sounds. I wonder if they're using the infamous dual-language version of
Un film comme les autres.

I doubt it. There were also English-dubbed versions of
Pravda and
Vent d'est (for the American college tour JLG and JPG did, I presume), and I believe there was a French dub of
Lotte in Italia. Presumably the DVDs will be using the new prints that were shown in Brazil last year, and hopefully this means a set coming from Gaumont (perhaps with English subs) in the not-too-distant future.

Are the region 2 Nouveaux Pictures DVDs any good? I see Masculin, Feminin doesn't look as good as the Criterion release over at DVDbeaver but how about the others? Are they likely to be released by someone else (like Optimum?) in better quality in the nearby future?

Criterion will be releasing TWO OR THREE THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER within the next year (or thereabouts).

if you're gonna get another Masculin Feminin, I highly recommend the Australian DVD which has another commentary by my favorite Godard commentator.

Choosing the right place to buy Godard on DVD seems almost as complicated as watching the damn things. Does he do it on purpose?
So in the ever more exciting quest for a complete good quality Breathless-Week End collection, would anyone like to comment on the Carabiniers region 1 DVD? Are there any known problems, or any plans for a Criterion or remastered Studio Canal with subs verison on the way?
