Would Fanny and Alexander really require a lot of work? It is out on BD in Europe.

The Swedish blu-ray is not exactly what you call a 'reference quality' release and considering Criterion always spends time perfecting their transfer, i think it will take a while.

I thought only the theatrical version had been released. I don't know if it's been confirmed that Criterion would be re-releasing just the short version on Blu as they did with The Last Emperor or if there's a chance they'll upgrade the whole box.

If Criterion wants to interview me about how a building I used to work in appears in the background of the Melanie Griffith / Jeff Daniels scene in Something Wild, and how I once geeked out by extensively freeze-framing it and then walking around that block figuring out what (including the birth and demise of the Screening Room rep theater) had changed since 1986, ah, what the heck, I'll do it for scale.

How can anyone not heart Melanie Griffith, c. 1986?!? Serious question.

Waters had a couple of movies on Criterion laserdisc - Pink Flamingos and Polyester

Speaking personally, that irritating voice has always been problem #1, regardless of the year.

I can't really say anything about her as a person or an actress, but I didn't really like anything about her character or her performance.

I would be angry if Criterion only released the 3 hour cut of Fanny and Alexander without the 5 hour cut in the same manner as they proceeded with The Last Emperor.

They couldn't possibly do that. Bergman stated more than once that the five-hour cut was his preferred version.

Also, Criterion kinda-hinted at a F&A Blu on their Facebook page.

this remains one of the great travesties of U.S. Dvd releases....the horrific Artisan disc was worse than a vhs, and the SE announced 5 years ago along with the releases of Secaucus 7, Lianna, Brother, etc remains the only one of Sayles' films to not get released by MGM. It saddens me considerably.

^ The Canadian DVD from Seville was far better than the U.S. release. The DVD currently available at Amazon.ca is from Paradox, which is under the same ownership as Seville, so I imagine it's an identical or similar transfer. It's only CDN$8.
A Criterion SE of this would be nice, and if they want to do something equally amazing, they could rescue the OOP Men With Guns.

Exactly. The TV version of The Last Emperor is not really supported by Bertolucci aside from being a curiosity.

Davies, Terence - (“our first entry is not likely to be a big box“) (Last Update: 11/09)

...there's not a whole lot out there for Davies as it is, unfortunately (and most of what there is would definitely be box-worthy), and with the Sony deal, it seems likely to me that The House of Mirth is a strong candidate.

Ooooh, I hope so. That film destroys me, geez. Much better, in my opinion, than Scorsese's Age of Innocence. Obviously the Scorsese is well- (or over-) directed, but the Davies just has this incredibly powerful, inexorable undertow of tradgedy.

So, because of the Amazon artwork "leak," can we assume Videodrome, Seven Samurai and Hausu for this week? I'm sure we'll get two more original releases but, even then, what a month.

Probably a essential arthouse as well. Maybe a catalog title or two in there.

I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, but IFC is running Peter Weir's The Cars that Ate Paris this morning, and it has the Janus Films logo on it.

I'm guessing that, to go along with House, they'll probably do a Japanese Genre Films Eclipse set (Yotsuya Ghost Story, War of the Insects, Living Skeleton, Goke: Body Snatcher from Hell). I'm also hoping against hope to see The X From Outer Space get an Equinox-like stand-alone edition that probably won't happen.

That's interesting. Could it coincide with the Blu-ray release of "Picnic at Hanging Rock"? :-s
