Well at least four of those will never happen.

Well, there's Silence of the Lambs, The Killer, and Hard Boiled, so I guess the last would be Hoop Dreams. A Blu-ray upgrade would be pointless given that the film was (I believe) at least mostly shot on Betacam. Then again, Blair Witch was released on Blu-ray, although Criterion might be above hoodwinking its customers like that.knives wrote:Well at least four of those will never happen.

That, and Warner controls the rights to New Line and Fine Line titles now. A shame, as I'd love a Private Idaho upgrade.
And a Blu-Ray of Blair Witch would at least benefit the portions of the film that were shot with 16mm. Hoop Dreams was shot entirely on tape and originally produced for a PBS affiliate.

L'AVVENTURA & L'ECLISSE must be due for an upgrade to BluRay sooner rather than later....

Cinephrenic's great lists of forthcoming Criterion and Eclipse titles and Criterion properties on Hulu can all now be found in this omnibus thread.

Regarding L'Avventura and L'Eclisse Blus:
Even if Mulvaney's being cagey, it'll probably be more than a year.rrenault wrote:By the way, I recently received an e-mail from Jon Mulvaney answering a question of mine. I was hoping for more Antonioni on Blu. Quite surprised we getting more minor titles on Blu. Must be a strictly sales decision.

Bear in mind that that response is four months old and that "currently don't have plans" should probably be interpreted as "nothing is going on with those at the moment." I mean, it could still be a while, years even, but I'm sure they intend to upgrade them eventually.

Also bear in mind that their schedule is roughly 6 months from decision to final product according to one of the older interviews with a Criterion staffer, sure they do a New Years Clue and there's that 2012 pick, but I'd imagine several titles are decided upon only 6 months previously; meaning the Antonioni's could well come sometime next year.

Hopefully they're waiting for good elements for La Notte so that the three films can be packaged together..

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned already, but DVD Empire has a heap of December Criterion titles up for pre-order
Branded to Kill, Tokyo Drifter, The Lady Vanishes, Design For Living all on Blu-ray.
I also can't get the Criterion homepage to load, which suggests they are doing an update.

Why would it have been mentioned?

I might have missed it, but I would think Carnival of Souls will be coming in 2012. One of my all time favorite spines.

What makes you think Carnival of Souls is coming in 2012? Count me in as a big fan!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
It just seems to make sense. It's an early spine number, it would highly benefit by a Blu-ray transfer and it's a stacked release. I love the cover art too.Feego wrote:What makes you think Carnival of Souls is coming in 2012? Count me in as a big fan!

Regarding which edition of Gold Rush will be released, from the October newsletter
The 1925 comedy masterpiece The Gold Rush (Charlie Chaplin’s own favorite of his films) will look and sound better than ever on October 10, as part of this year’s New York Film Festival. The screening of the new restoration by the Criterion Collection and the Cineteca di Bologna—which reinstates several scenes that were cut for the oft-screened 1942 rerelease version and omits the voice-over narration Chaplin added for that release—

Yeah, I think that pretty well seals that we'll get it (though probably not for a while.) It does sound like there's an implication still that the '42 version is the primary one and this is the alternative, so it's possible they'll treat the '24 version as an extra, but as long is its in 1080p I don't give a damn.

Saw a Janus print of Gate of Flesh at NYFF yesterday, DCP projection (most definitely not 35mm as was advertised). Possible upgrade? It looked amazing. Joe Shishido was there in person to introduce as well!

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Demy's Bay of Angels credited Janus Films/Criterion at Pacific BAM screening.
Bay of Angels
Jacques Demy (France, 1962)
Imported 35mm print!
(La baie des anges). Compulsive gambler Jeanne Moreau aims her manic schemes and Bette Davis eyes at a naive young bank clerk in this sun-drenched, nicotine-stained ode to the gamblers and losers of the French Riviera. First seen walking proudly along the Monte Carlo boardwalk in the film's justifiably famous opening, the glamorous but fraying Jackie (Moreau) is more comfortable in the less blinding enclosure of a casino, where a clueless bank clerk soon falls for her. "I thought this lifestyle only existed in American movies," he marvels, but the joy of Bay of Angels is that it only exists in this movie: the whirl of roulette wheels, the constant click of chips, elegance and effortless cool, all framed by the radiant black-and-white camerawork of Jean Rabier and the music of Michel Legrand. Towering above it all in white boas and heavy makeup is Moreau, capable of making even borderline-psychotic addiction look enthralling in "a bravura demonstration of star power on the rampage" (New York Times) —Jason Sanders
• Written by Demy. Photographed by Jean Rabier. With Jeanne Moreau, Claude Mann, Paul Guers, Henri Nassiet. (85 mins, In French with English subtitles, B&W, 35mm, From Institut Français, permission Janus Films/Criterion Collection)

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
David Kalat's blog confirms that Criterion's going to be releasing a Pierre Etaix Eclipse set. He says it should be identical to the extent French one (though presumably it will add subtitles.)
